Issues with the Source Engine at 4K resolution
Hello! This situation is really puzzling me. Yesterday I received an Acer K242HQK 4K monitor. That’s fine with me. I decided to test it out by playing some games to check compatibility and performance. If you’re curious about my specs, my signature has all the details. I tried five titles: Half-Life, System Shock 2, Half-Life 2, BioShock, and Civilization V. Half-Life performed well, staying under the 100 FPS limit without any problems. System Shock 2 crashed at launch, but that’s okay for now. BioShock ran smoothly in 4K resolution. Civilization V was a bit rough but still playable at around 20 to 30 FPS. The real challenge came with Half-Life 2—its splash screens were noticeably slow. After loading the menu and checking the FPS counter, I captured a screenshot of the issue.
Additionally, I played Portal 2 and Half-Life Source, but they also failed. #rip
My machine restarted itself (under strange circumstances) so I tried it again. Half-Life 2...works better, I guess? I mean, it's not especially smooth at 4K (I caught a screenshot in the station at City 17), and it runs...somewhat smoother at least. Still not ideal, but it's improved a little bit. Still confuses me how it runs at a lower frame rate than BioShock......DirectX 10, maybe?
I'm not entirely confident about the details since I've been taught about tech from after 2012.
Checking if the drivers or Crossfire are working. Confirming Crimson update status and temperature tracking. Verifying Crossfire availability in HL2.
A mix of drivers plus poor optimization can lead to issues like crossfire, and the source engine really dislikes using two GPUs together.
