Hello everyone, here’s what happened. After months of waiting, I finally purchased a new machine for my birthday—though I’m still figuring it out. The setup includes an ASUS GeForce RTX 3070 Ti TUF OC, an Intel Core i7-12700K, Kingston Fury Beast DDR5 5200MHz 32GB CPU, a Corsair iCUE H150i ELITE display, a Cooler Master MasterCase H500P with RGB, an MCM H500P-MGNN-S11 case, a 850W PSU from CPU Boards, and Windows 11 with Secure Boot enabled. Initially, everything worked smoothly for a while. But then random freezing episodes began. For a short time, it ran perfectly—until the screen would flash twice with RGB lights, sound like a connection reset, then vanish and reappear. The keyboard would disconnect, requiring constant reconnection. It became unpredictable whether it would freeze or not, regardless of activity—gaming, streaming, browsing.
I investigated by checking USB issues, BIOS settings, and running diagnostics. After some testing, the problem persisted, especially during intense tasks. Eventually, I noticed the RGB LEDs would reset the system settings upon a freeze. I tried deeper checks with Microsoft Memory Diagnostics and MemTest86+, which revealed intermittent memory errors and inconsistent RAM results. One test showed a partial failure in slot 4, but another slot worked fine. I rechecked all RAM sticks, found some consistent failures, and even managed to clear issues after a thorough retest.
Despite multiple attempts, the free versions of diagnostics kept giving mixed signals—sometimes crashing, sometimes passing. Eventually, I switched to the open-source MemTest86 software, which also produced erratic outcomes. I tried different RAM modules one by one, but consistency remained elusive. After several hours of testing and searching online, I learned that running the extra CPU connector (mentioned in the manual) helped stabilize performance. The machine still froze occasionally, but it would recover after a few seconds.
I’m still trying to pinpoint the exact cause. The RAM inconsistencies were concerning, and the random freezes disrupted my workflow. If you have any tips or know of known issues with these components, I’d really appreciate your advice. Thanks for your help!
Sure! It sounds like the i7-12700k handles 5200 Mhz memory pretty well, though it automatically adjusts to 4800 Mhz. Tools like CPU-Z and Task Manager confirm this behavior. You might want to try changing the settings in BIOS manually—could affect performance.
Hmm yes i'd still put it at 4800 in the motherboard if it isn't already. Or turn off xmp all the way and just keep it at the stock speed it defaults to and see if that resolvers anything. What bios version are you on? If there's a more recent version available install it, they usually improve memory compatibility.
I adjusted the frequency to 4800Mhz and confirmed it was already set in the BIOS/Memory overview. Let's observe the results, though it may take a week of testing to see what happens. Any further advice would be appreciated. XMP is currently disabled, BIOS version 1620 appears to be the latest for my board. Thanks for your patience!
