Issues with the game repeatedly stopping on a powerful gaming computer
Hi, Posting here because I truly don't know where else to go for help and I'm terrified I just spent $2000 on a gaming PC that can't actually run games. Specs first: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X GPU: ASUS AMD 6900XT Tuf MB: Asus B650-Plus PSU: Corsair RM850X Cooler: Fairly basic BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4, but I've yet to see the temperatures go over 70C so I don't think that's the issue OS: Win 11 Home I haven't bought a 4k monitor or even a DP cable yet, so I'm just using an HDMI cable into a Dell P2419HC. Originally I was running an ASROCK AMD 6900XT, but had to RMA due to my build failing to post. I exchanged for the ASUS AMD 6900XT Tuf, but am now experiencing crashes to desktop in every game I run -- usually within a couple of minutes of starting up. I've updated to the latest BIOS firmware and updated drivers for the GPU, MoBO audio and chipset, Windows, and everything else I can think of. I have two separate cables running power from the GPU to the PSU - they're not daisy chained -- and have checked all connections. I tried undervolting the GPU -- have not tried overclocking yet. I disabled Re-Size BAR support in BIOS -- that actually solved the problem for a few hours, but the next day the problem started up again. At this point I am at complete loss for how to salvage the situation. Any insight into whether this is a hardware or software issue? Could I have gotten two faulty GPUs back to back? Should I do a complete drive re-format and start again? Appreciate any help I can get here, and happy to share any system files that might shed light on what's going on.
Same process causes instability and wear. Temperatures often exceed 70°C, according to in-game data. Use Furmark Rog for GPU stress tests and Heavy Load for CPU stress tests, then share the findings.
Restarted Windows and used new drivers with reduced graphics settings. Same issues appeared in Warhammer III, unfortunately. The game freezes after a short runtime: GPU drops to zero usage, and I get redirected to the desktop. Most often this occurs during intense combat, but it has also happened on the campaign map. Yes, I haven’t noticed temperatures exceeding 70°C in-game, though I’ve only managed to play for about 20–30 minutes at a time. Ran Furmark Rog with default settings for 30 minutes (GPU stayed at defaults too—only briefly tried undervolting once). Temperature reached 70°C and everything functioned normally—results attached. Ran HeavyLoad as well, but only for 10 minutes since I have a flight to catch. Overall it looked fine, but I’m unsure what exactly needs improvement. The status bar during the stress test showed "25.7 GB Memory available, 100% CPU Usage, 199 FPS" and remained constant throughout. _rog_log.txt
CPU is also checking temperatures. It's unclear if DP ports have caught up with HDMI yet. In terms of response time, some monitors reach as low as 1ms. Regarding cables, performance must be improved too. I need to refresh my understanding. My focus is now on software since hardware appears okay. Here are my next questions: 1) What is the vertical refresh rate of your monitor? 2) Does your monitor support Freesync and run Enhanced Sync in drivers? 3) Is Windows 11 still in testing, and have you disabled Auto Updates? (Just notify, no downloads needed) 4) Are you using VSR? Turn it off if you get a new monitor. 5) For older games, AMD features like DLSS won't work—this could cause issues. Try the AMD overlay and check readings during gameplay before crashes.
Sorry for the delay—I've been away visiting family over the holidays. Right now I'm using a business monitor from work: a Dell P2419HC connected via HDMI. It's not ideal for gaming, but I plan to upgrade to a 4K screen later once the setup issues are fixed. I ordered a DisplayPort cable, though I'm not sure it will fully resolve the issue; I expect it will be useful eventually. It seems the vertical refresh rate is likely 60 Hz on this display. FreeSync isn't supported here. I disabled Auto Updates for Windows and turned off VSR. Radeon Super Resolution is also off. I activated HDMI Link Assurance and Enhanced Sync as recommended by @Cyberat. Checked the AMD overlay and didn’t see anything unusual before the game crashed, though I’m not sure what to look for. Power consumption was about 278W, with temperatures normal (under 80°C for GPU and around 80°C for the GPU junction). Could this be a power supply problem? It might be a faulty unit or the 850W PSU isn’t enough for this 6900XT. The card’s box lists an 850W PSU as the minimum, but I saw someone on another forum suggesting they needed a 1000W unit to prevent crashes.
