Issues with the driver for a black screen on RTX 5070.
Hello,
I recently installed a new computer and encountered a persistent problem with my monitor. Whenever I update the latest drivers, the screen goes black and fails to return, usually after about 20 to 30 minutes of operation. During this time, the computer appears to run in idle mode with fans spinning, but nothing happens. After a restart, the system doesn’t boot properly—first showing a BIOS freeze, then a brief black screen, and finally displaying "No Signal." The only solution I’ve found is entering BIOS before freezing, disabling Secure Boot, and installing a specific NVIDIA driver that resolves the issue.
My computer specifications are as follows:
- Ryzen 7 5700X3D
- Gigabyte RTX 5070 Windforce OC SFF
- Gigabyte B550 Gaming X V2
- DDR4 32GB RAM
- Windows 11
The driver that works is version 572.83, but all newer versions I’ve tried have the same problem. I’ve already tried several fixes: reinstalling Windows 11 multiple times, using a different monitor, reseating the GPU multiple times (including switching cables), and using the NVIDIA app instead of downloading directly.
I’m still unsure where the real issue lies, and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
If the system is started in Safe Mode, check Reliability History/Monitor and Event Viewer for error codes, warnings, or event details that only show during the installation of new drivers and when the system fails to boot. Contrast the latest log entries with those before the driver update.
The system requires some time to restart after switching to Safe Mode, typically completing an automatic repair before launching, followed by installing the specific NVIDIA driver to resolve the problem. I'm uncertain about verifying Event Viewer during the driver installation since it leads to a black screen. Since my CPU lacks integrated graphics, I can't observe the installation process clearly. I've also experimented with changing HDMI to DisplayPort and vice versa. Once I managed to boot after a restart in newer NVIDIA driver versions, there were several minor fixes, as the installation was corrupt—Device Manager reported issues like "GPU not working properly." I'm considering installing Windows 10 as a last option.
Going back a bit...
Did you only use the cables that came with the PSU?
Is this motherboard?

Take some time to go through the documentation again, including Chapter 2.
Be sure to read every small detail, warning, and specification.
If something is mentioned in the manual, check the manufacturer's site for the latest info.
Don’t forget to reset CMOS and start fresh—follow the instructions in the manual (Motherboard, Paragraph 16, Page 19).
It seems the issue might just be a small oversight or mistake. Take your time, read thoroughly, verify everything,
Because details count.
Hi, this will be quite a long one as I've done quite of bit of troubleshooting - this thread is mostly to check if I haven't missed anything as I do not have a different computer to plug the GPU in at the current moment.
Specs:
Gigabyte B550 Gaming X V2
Ryzen 7 5700X3D
RTX 5070
750W PSU, gold rated
32GB RAM
2 NvME drivers, one 1TB 970 EVO and another WD 2TB
Got the GPU, installed WIN11 - black screen on 576.80 NVIDIA driver install, while doing clean reinstalls of WIN11, however during testing found that 572.83, one of the initial drivers, worked perfectly fine - no issues during stress/performance issues. 576.88+ fixed the black screen, however, after updating the drivers, the drivers do not install at all, NVIDIA app installer says it's fine, but NVIDIA app can not find any installed drivers and
Device Manager pops up with a Code 43 error,
using DDU, revert back to 572.83. Recently reverted back to WIN10, same issue, however I've had two BSODs, one during load and one at idle, both were DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, dxgmms2.sys failed.
One of the NVIDIA installer logs showed that the drivers had issues overwritting oemXX.inf files, however that can not be an issue on partitioned fresh installs of WIN
Troubleshooting that has already been done:
Clean reinstalls of WIN11 and WIN10
Resizable BAR, 4G Decoding, CSM Support switched ON/OFF
BIOS flash
PCIE settings changed from AUTO->4Gen
Turning off WIN updates and internet during install
Did you perform any memory assessments during testing or when setting up the system to check for consistent RAM performance?
