Issues with Ryzen 5950X single core overclocking and related problems.
Hi there, I just assembled a Ryzen 5950X for my friend who has 32GB (four sets of 8GB) Dominator RGB 16-18-18-36 RAM on a C8DH motherboard. He chose to run his 1080Ti until he can find better options like the I3090 3080Ti or 3080 with good value. The AIO cooler is an H115i RGB, paired with Corsair 280mm two ML 140 RGB fans for exhaust on top. The case is a 500D SE RGB featuring three intake ML120 fans in front and one back for exhaust. I’m using the Corsair AX1600i PSU, but unfortunately, the 1080Ti stopped working soon after the build, so I couldn’t even run benchmarks. He ended up getting a GT210 just to get some CPU benchmark results.
He shared the configuration during a video and sent me photos to verify everything. Here’s what he set up:
- Memory frequency: 3600MHZ
- Core performance boost: Auto
- CPU core ratio: 1.3000 (CCX)
- Core VID: 1.3000
- CCD0: 46.25
- CCD1: 46.25
- Dynamic OC switcher: Enabled
- Threshold: 75
- Precision Boost Over Drive: Advanced, PBO limit set to 2X
- Scalar: 2X MAX
- CPU clock override: 200MHZ
- Curve Optimizer: All cores negative by 15
- Extreme tweaker DRAM timing: 16-18-18-36
With these settings, I consistently hit all cores at around 4.625G and kept temperatures near 71°C during benchmarks in Cinebench R23. However, single-core performance was only about 4.65G—not even reaching 4.7G in Windows Task Manager.
I suspect the GT210 might be the culprit, as it didn’t reach 5.05G on single-core tests. I also haven’t installed the original AMD drivers or used AMD Ryzen Master Utility, which could be contributing. Maybe the thermal paste didn’t perform well? Temperatures are decent, but the issue remains.
Corsair Icue software caused screen tears after installation, showing a red triangle on the RAM and preventing control. The GT210 isn’t showing up in the system, and there’s still a faulty USB connection even after reinstalling Windows.
What could be causing these problems? Why aren’t single cores hitting higher speeds? Could it be a defective chip? All cores are running at 4.625G with good temps around 1.3V.
Appreciate any insights!
You should check peak single-thread performance with tools such as HWMonitor instead of Task Manager.
Current Gen AMD systems don’t support Hwmonitor well. Use HWInfo64 instead.
