Issues with Ryzen 5000 and MSI Gaming Carbon BIOS flashing problems have been reported.
I recently purchased a Ryzen 7 5800X and an MSI B550 Gaming Carbon WiFi. I'm facing problems updating the BIOS to one compatible with the latest 5000 series chips. Last week I managed to use the BIOS flashback feature to update a beta version that supported the new series (found on MSI's site). This week MSI released a full non-beta BIOS for the new CPU, so I decided to try updating with the same method, thinking it would be safer than using the beta. However, I encountered difficulties. The process took longer than expected—about 2 hours instead of the usual 5 minutes—and the red LED kept flashing even after the update. Eventually, I had to shut down the system because nothing appeared to change. I've tested many solutions: ensuring the correct partition, using FAT32 format, trying other components, clearing CMOS with a button or jumper, using different drives, and even switching BIOS versions. Still, the red light keeps blinking indefinitely. I've shared my issue on Reddit, but no one else seems to have the same problem. I contacted MSI Tech Support, who replied with only a brief note about submitting an online RMA for warranty service. That helped a bit, but now I'm considering RMAing if I can't find a solution. Any advice or resources would be greatly appreciated.
Flash the BIOS by removing the CPU. Wipe the CMOS completely—turn off the PSU, disconnect the battery, and press the start button to discharge any remaining charge. Wait 30-60 seconds. Reassemble the battery, then power on the PSU. Begin the BIOS flash. If the initial attempt fails without the CPU, try a backup procedure without the memory, but always clear the CMOS. For best results, use version 1.0.8.0 Agesa first. Good luck.
I mostly worked without using the CPU, even though I tested it just to verify. The same goes for RAM. I’ve been clearing CMOS, trying different methods, but I’m not sure what you meant by the "start button." I used MSI BIOS version 7C90v13. For reference, I’ve tried: 7C90v14, 7C90v13, 7C90v12, 7C90v10 and the original beta version I flashed: 7C90v144.
Consider using another flash drive. It seemed to malfunction once, but the same format and file resolved the issue on the second try.
