Issues with performance in recent games
Hello,
I’ve never had any issues with game performance, especially with titles like Steel Division or Witcher 3. I’m used to around 60 fps. Recently, I tried the game Post Scriptum, expecting it to be enjoyable, but it turned out quite frustrating. My frame rate consistently drops below 20 FPS even at the lowest settings. I’m puzzled since other games run smoothly on my PC. Should I consider upgrading my system? Which parts should I focus on? It’s about four to five years old. Thanks ahead of time.
Here are my details:
Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600
Motherboard: Micro-Star International Co. Ltd B350 TOMAHAWK (MS-7A34) (AM4)
Graphics: 2460G5 (1920x1080@60Hz)
Acer K222HQL (1920x1080@60Hz)
2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (MSI)
Storage: 223GB KINGSTON SA400S37240G (SATA-2 SSD)
1863GB Western Digital WDC WD20EZRZ-00Z5HB0 (SATA)
The GPU is significantly above what's needed for Post Scriptum, while the CPU barely meets minimum standards. The 1333 RAM speed falls short of the recommended 3200 for optimal performance with an older Ryzen CPU. It's worth checking if XMP is enabled in the BIOS. For better cooling, consider a Ryzen 5 3600 paired with a G.Skill Ripjaws V 2x16GB 3200 RAM setup. This would maintain the CPU at 65w and exceed requirements slightly. Make sure to activate XMP for the RAM in the MB Bios to achieve full speed.
The GPU demands are significantly higher than what Post Scriptum requires, while your CPU barely meets the minimum standards for it. Your RAM speed of 1333 is also insufficient for running an older Ryzen CPU at its optimal performance (3200 recommended). Please verify if XMP is enabled in the BIOS, as this could affect RAM performance.
For reference, a Ryzen 5 3600 paired with a G.Skill Ripjaws V 2x16GB 3200 RAM setup would maintain your CPU at 65W and exceed typical requirements. Make sure to activate XMP for the RAM in the BIOS to achieve the rated speed.
The suggested price is around $316, but these recommendations assume you're in the US. Please specify your country for more accurate advice.
I have limited knowledge about Post Scriptum and haven't found much information on it, so I'm not entirely certain it will resolve the issue completely. However, after reviewing this, I'm more confident it could help, given that the i5 8400 CPU here is only about 3% faster than an R5 3600, with similar GPU and RAM performance.
Keep in mind that if you plan to play more demanding games later, consider upgrading your cooler for better performance. The Scythe Mugen 5 Rev B cooler is a highly recommended budget option.
Also, ensure your case width provides at least 155mm clearance between the CPU's back and the left side panel of your case, as the cooler is 154.5mm tall. It's also wise to check your current temperatures with the existing cooler before making a change. The type of case and its ventilation play a crucial role in determining if an upgrade is necessary.
