Short summary: From version 3080 to 4090, nothing changed except a minor update. After multiple attempts—boots, Safe Mode, driver changes, formatting, reinstalling—I still faced black screens or freezes. Recently, the card now fits directly in the PCI slot and works well after several 3DMark tests passed. I’m hoping someone can help mount it vertically.

Acknowledge this? Not necessarily. Focus on finding a top-tier riser cable and test it only if it’s genuinely the right one. Any compatible card would require a vertical mount, especially with 16 lanes available—PCIe 3 works without bandwidth limits. Even a 4090 won’t overwhelm those lanes.

The configuration remains the same; only the interface type is adjusted.

I understand that certain boards can encounter problems with specific riser cables. Frequently, BIOS updates resolve the issue, but sometimes you must switch to another cable for proper functionality. I’ve tried a Thermal Grizzy 4.0 Riser cable in a friend’s setup with a 3090 Ti and have no prior experience with 4000 series cards, so I’d expect they also require premium quality connections. On a minor point, those tubes appear to be missing some clamps.

High quality combined with a fair price offers the best chance of certainty beyond mere luck. This is just my view. With so many deals available and many subpar products vying for low prices, it's hard to find anything that truly meets expectations. The 4090 model seems to limit slot options, so if you need more, a PCIe 90-degree adapter might be necessary. Those I’ve seen work better because they provide a direct connection rather than relying on cables. I don’t know for sure if it fits your requirements, but I have one in my wife’s PC—she appreciated the RGB lighting on the water block, and the GPU is already installed. It can be frustrating if she ever needs an M.2 replacement, as I’d have to remove the GPU to access it.

I hoped the Asus cables were of good quality, so I plan to test the EK solution next. I might try 3.0, though I think it probably isn't needed.

I didn't attempt it; just switched from version 4.0 to Auto in the bios, but it didn't work.

BIOS is current but I’ll stay alert. I expected the Asus cables to be high quality, but they weren’t. I’m checking for the Thermal Grisly cable or the EK fix. Yes, just a short trial to see if the card functions. I’m using hardline tubing and didn’t want to waste time making new ones if it doesn’t work.

The sensation of the Asus cables felt decent, though the internal quality was questionable. They also came at a high price. I’m unfamiliar with them, but I’ll search for alternatives if none are satisfactory. In any case, I’ll need to remove the GPU since there’s no space left for additional work on the card.

Sounds reasonable, just adding a few cable ties would help. For the Riser cable connected to O11, the one for the 4000 series cards seems to perform well too. Regarding Riser cables on the 4000 series, it appears they tend to approach the PCI-e specifications closely. Earlier cards handled most standard Riser cables without issues. I haven’t worked with a 4000 series card myself, but it’s clear some users face challenges with 3.0 Riser cables and even certain 4.0 ones.
