Hello.
I’m facing an issue where I can’t successfully overclock my AMD FX 8350 to above 4.2 GHz. The voltage for the CPU core is currently at 1.408 V, and someone advised me not to go beyond 1.415 V on the v-core to avoid damaging the motherboard.
My computer is about half a year old, and I’ve noticed lag spikes during gaming, which isn’t related to internet problems. It began roughly two weeks ago. Others on similar setups are achieving around 4.5 to 4.6 GHz with these CPU cores.
Here’s my setup:
Motherboard: MSI 970 GAMING
CPU: AMD FX-8350 (overclocked to 4.2 GHz) – can’t handle it!
GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 470 Nitro+ 4GB DDR5 (default settings don’t allow overclocking).
RAM: Kingston DDR3 8GB 1866MHz CL10
PSU: Corsair VS650 (650W)
SSD: CORSAIR FORCE LE (120 GB)
I also have a new HDD: WD BLUE (1.0 TB), but I had issues with it before.
My temperatures are normal, around 20-30°C when idle, and about 50-60°C during CPU load in games, though the northbridge seems to be running hotter, near 80°C.
I don’t have access to an active cooler anywhere; they’re sold out or discontinued.
With these two concerns, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Track your cpu activity during these lag increases, observe if usage changes when this happens.
In a hidden test you won't detect the distinction between 4.2ghz and 4.5ghz. Don't fret too much, it seems your processor might be acting strangely.

Honestly, given the low quality of the power supply, I think this is a solid overclock if it's stable. Yes, you have one of the most stable of the 970 motherboards, but the more you push that Corsair VS, the more ripple and looser the voltage regulation you're feeding the motherboard to deal with.

I believed corsair had a good quality PSU, so I compared it to some lesser-known models and thought corsair would be the better option. I decided to go with the 650, as I read many positive reviews about it. I was considering that my motherboard might be the main issue in my PC. 😊
Because I discovered another GIGABYTE 990X-GAMING SLI.

Can I send it to reclamation? The CPU might replace it for you since the issue isn’t your fault, and you still have a two-year warranty.

I believed corsair offers a solid PSU, so I compared it to the CORSAIR VS 650 and thought Corsair would be a better option. After reading many positive reviews, I decided to try it out. I was hoping my motherboard wasn't the main issue in my PC. 😊

However, I discovered another GIGABYTE 990X-GAMING SLI. It might be better than the no-name model, but it's Corsair's cheapest PSU, using low-quality capacitors and not suitable for a high-performance gaming rig, especially one that needs overclocking. If you can maintain stability at this voltage, go ahead!

It’s also not worth investing in a new motherboard right now. The next one you buy should be on a modern platform.

PatriX :
So can i send it on reclamation ? the cpu and they will give me another one ? because its not my fault that my piece have bad permormance. Also i have 2 year warranty
There's no promise about high overclocking, it's not a reason that will allow you to swap the CPU.

also i encountered another issue, for instance when I'm in rocket league in menu sometimes certain squares show up on my monitor, not sure if it's a monitor or gpu problem. it feels like the old tv with black and white noise you mentioned. i have that same problem but it's just in some lines, not the whole screen. :/
it's amazing how for half a year i had no issues now, but lately i'm facing these annoying problems. i think maybe bad luck is involved...
thanks again for all your advice
