Issues with low frame rate or stuttering when watching games on TV through HDMI
Hey everyone,
I'm facing a peculiar problem. My MSI GS75 is running a 2080 Max-Q, and I attempted to play games on my TV for the first time today. Even basic titles like Overcooked 2 are stuck at 20–50 FPS, rarely reaching 60 or more. I also played A Way Out (co-op) and while it occasionally hits over 100 FPS, it keeps stuttering and drops to as low as 15 FPS. My GPU usage stays between 10–50% and doesn’t increase, which seems to be the root cause.
When I play directly on my laptop, I can handle any game, including high-end titles with maximum framerates.
The TV is UHD, but the games are set to 1920x1080 resolution.
I've already tried:
- Installing the latest nVidia drivers
- Using the eGPU as the preferred graphics card
- Testing various HDMI cables
- Switching TV to Game Mode
- Using duplicate screen, extending screen, or second screen modes
- Checking temperatures, which average 75–80°C during gaming (good for a gaming laptop)
Any advice or assistance would be really appreciated.
Thanks!
Is it certain the television can handle 60 frames per second? It might actually be a 30Hz or 48Hz 4K display, which are quite typical.
Is there any chance you're showing the screen on both your laptop and TV at once? You're not allowed to do that. You can only use one display at a time. That's the information I have to assist you. Perhaps try reducing the resolution slightly.
I just read that you tried that. Dang, I don't know what to do then. Sorry man. Maybe ask a mod to put this question in a different subforum because you might get some better answers in a hardware subforum.
