Issues with low FPS and massive frame rate drops in games!
I have a GTX 1060 with 6GB RAM and an i5 7500 processor. I usually play games like Destiny 2, Rainbow Six Siege, CS:GO, etc. I had four 4GB RAM sticks (total 16GB) but one failed, so I removed it, though I don’t think that’s the issue. I suspect it might be related to my graphics card or drivers. I used to run these games smoothly, but now frames are dropping in social spaces, menus, and even when just browsing. I adjusted my graphics settings and changed NVIDIA control panel settings based on YouTube tips to reduce lag and frame drops. Despite those changes, I still experience frequent drops. I only removed two sticks of the same 16GB RAM and the problem persisted, so I’m worried it’s a graphics-related issue. Any advice would be appreciated. I’m really struggling right now. Thanks.
It depends on the amount of RAM as well, but a typical 10 fps decrease when removing 4gb RAM seems unrealistic. Adjust your settings gradually, moving them to higher or medium levels if FPS improves, which might indicate an issue with RAM. Make sure your GPU drivers are current and there are no software conflicts causing high RAM consumption. Before starting any game, verify the RAM usage via Task Manager. If your motherboard supports dual channels, place the RAM in the correct slots.
You're right, for a GPU like the GTX 1060 that worked well before, only game-ready drivers were needed. No additional updates beyond those should have been available.
You not only lost 4GB of RAM but also dual-channel mode. Consider using just 2 sticks in slots 2 and 4 (from the CPU). Check that both sticks are operating in dual-channel with CPU-Z. Running at 8GB is reasonable for some AAA games, though it may perform better than running 12GB in single-channel mode about 99% of the time.
there are some issues to consider, such as a system with 2x4gb and 1x4 gb nerfs itself, just because one of the ram channels will be in SDR while the other can operate at double speed.
a system that has limited ram causes problems; the extra data it needs to handle is stored on your hard drive, which then creates another potential bottleneck.
i recommend following the advice of Alceryes, using 8gb and aiming for 16 somedays, otherwise you'll encounter serious frame drops as described...
Additionally consider turning off Vsync in the NVIDIA control panel and within the game.
