Issues with Greasy Remnants on PSU Cables
Hello, I recently received my new PSU (Corsair RM850x) and planned to install it, but before doing so, I noticed a shiny, oily film on most of the cables that came with it. The stains appear as a very dark red color. I attempted to remove it using a dry q-tip, but it didn’t come off. You can view the attached images for reference.

What is this shiny residue? Is it normal? Should I return the PSU or try cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol myself?
Hello, I recently purchased my new PSU (Corsair RM850x) and planned to install it, but before doing so, I observed a shiny, oily film on the ends of nearly all the cables included. Please do not interfere with it. Keep any videos or photos of the problem you mentioned. Return the unit to the seller or RMA department. It shouldn't appear this way when it comes out of the box. This might be due to a returned item or someone attempting to create a custom harness by marking the first or last pin on the connector, but your images suggest the marking was placed randomly. Either way, I would recommend returning it. Note that isopropyl alcohol can damage the plastic connector, which you should avoid if you plan to keep the PSU for an extended period.
These are likely just indicator marks. Placed in the factory to verify the cable passed a quality check.
Alcohol might remove them. If not, they sit on the connector's exterior and won't affect anything nearby.
I won't attempt to clean with isopropyl alcohol.
For someone new to PC building, what's a custom harness?
How can I identify which pins are the first or last? Would it be the leftmost or rightmost pin on one side of the connector?
That's what I thought too. I might be able to locate a reference, so perhaps the OP can reach out to the manufacturer.
It seems you were correct. I discovered Corsair's PSU FAQ page, and as they say, "PSU cables are often tested to ensure proper connection. Once the cable passes the test, it gets marked with a Sharpie Marker to indicate it has been verified." It was a bit naive not to look deeper, but I hope this helps anyone facing the same issue.
