Issues with games running under 100 fps appear sluggish when viewed on a 144hz display.
I recently purchased a new 144 hz monitor and noticed that most games that don’t run smoothly at 100+ fps seem to lag below 60 fps. I bought it thinking there wouldn’t be a huge difference between 60 fps on 60hz or 144hz, but ideally I’d want to play at 72+ fps, which is achievable. I found out others share this issue. Many mentioned that getting used to 144hz makes the problem worse when playing at 60fps. I believe that’s accurate, though I don’t think it has to be that large a gap. When I tested my new monitor, I was already experiencing lag right away after moving the mouse. I tried using an older monitor, but the same problems persisted. I also played some PS4 games that could run at 60 fps on this monitor, and they worked perfectly. After using the new monitor for a while, I visited a friend who uses a 60hz display and didn’t notice much difference.
If you’re looking for guidance, here are the details:
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3400G
RAM: 8 (4x2)
OS: Windows 10 Pro
MONITOR: AOC 24G1WG4
It seems FreeSync isn't turned on. With a 144hz display, you'd need a DisplayPort connection to make it function, and then adjust GSync settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel. At 100fps on a 144hz screen without sync, the image quality is often better than at 60fps with Vsync active and no stutter. Most FreeSync monitors, even those not officially certified for Gsync, perform well with NVIDIA GPUs.
I attempted hdmi and displayport, but now I'm using displayport.
Unfortunately the experience didn't work as expected. I thought it would, but it isn't consistent across all games. For instance, Mortal Kombat X runs at 60 fps without noticeable issues, though it's different from before. Playing Minecraft at 75 fps feels like 20-30 frames per second, which is similar to what you'd expect. Cod Warzone also behaves this way—70+ fps gives a 30-40 FPS feel, which is quite bothersome.
