Hello, I'm checking if I can upgrade just the CPU and GPU of my old PC without spending much. I have some questions about compatibility. The board I have is an Intel DQ67SW (Canada Ices-003 Class-B). My CPU is an Intel i5-2500S at 2.70GHz, and I have two GPUs: a GeForce GT 710 chipset and a GTX 1660 SUPER. I’m thinking about swapping the motherboard or other settings if needed. The system was made in 2016 and some features were enabled. I’m okay with these two parts as a start, but if I need more help, let me know.

Your system is built around an Intel platform, so AMD CPUs aren't compatible. You'll need to purchase a compatible motherboard. Based on what you're using, it seems DDR3 RAM is present, which means you should switch to DDR4. Also, check the power supply unit's wattage—most likely, you're starting from scratch.

You essentially need to create an entirely new setup from the ground up. As previously noted, your existing motherboard won’t work with a Ryzen 3900X (why aim for a chip that’s two generations behind and no longer supported?), you’ll require updated RAM for the Ryzen processor, you’re already installing a new graphics card, and I wouldn’t rely on a power supply designed for an era when an i5-2500 was still in use—even if it could technically provide sufficient power. Instead, consider joining the "New builds & planning" forum and reaching out to others for guidance on assembling a system that fits your budget and objectives.

You’ll need to start fresh from the beginning, that’s clear. I’m not sure if I’m interpreting this correctly, but it seems the point is I’m focusing on older hardware rather than cutting-edge chips. I’m comfortable with simpler titles like TF2, L4D2, or GTA IV, and I’m okay with a reasonable price for what I need. The chipset details are just background info I already have, not something I’m actively pursuing. Thanks for the help—good luck!

By that time, it seemed Dell had already made some questionable changes to their custom power supply connectors, so a new PSU would be necessary.

He meant why are you fixated on 3900x. AM4 won't continue, the next AMD chip will be AM5. And Ryzen 7000 is about to be released. That will make 3900x 2 generations behind. The word "My wants" kinda implied fixation/obsession. Post in New Builds & Planning subforum, there's a sticky there on how to properly post a help request. If there is something you really need/want to have in your soon-to-be system, say it in the post. Also, dunno if you know this or not, if you want someone to know / be notified of your direct reply to their post, quote their post or tag them, like this @roxjon

Probably another new PC case as well, right?
