I'm experiencing some unusual problems with Borderlands 2. The CPU isn't hitting 100% usage, and my GPU's VRAM stays mostly unused—around 512MB out of 1GB. My system runs an Athlon X4 860K with R7 250. I can play most older games smoothly, even in 1080p, though some from 2014 like The Crew feel a bit slow on the CPU. Reducing resolution helps a little, but adjusting video settings doesn't improve performance. PhysX is set to its lowest level. What might be causing this?

What’s the problem? FPS lag. How much RAM do you have? What temperatures are you seeing? Is your GPU overclocked?

I adjusted the visual options and achieved a stable frame rate. The performance was solid, though not as high as some might expect from that hardware. The AMD card didn’t affect the results.

No GPU overclocking due to a power failure that damaged the VRMs on my card. I can't even increase the clock speed by 1MHz with 4GB RAM. I understand it's limited, but I intend to upgrade to an AM4 board once the Ryzen 2 is replaced. Buying DDR3 RAM now wouldn't be wise. The problem is I'm stuck at around 30 FPS at 1050p and 45 FPS at 1440x900, with no obvious bottleneck.

This application performs poorly on my machine with an i7 processor and GTX 1070 at 1080p resolution, which explains the problems you're facing. It isn't well suited to the latest Nvidia or AMD drivers. I've tried contacting the developers, but they seem unable to commit resources for a patch since neither 2K nor Gearbox is open to making changes. The Physics settings are another point of contention. Often my frame rate drops from 60 to just 15 while the GPU runs at only 15% capacity. It's regrettable because the player base remains substantial despite the game's age.

Did you actually understand what I said? I told you adjusting the video settings makes no difference, and I’m not looking for much performance from my R7 250. It should handle most games, including the crew, but the CPU is limiting the experience.

It's interesting I handle DNF without any issues.

I believe it's time to begin washing cars and conserving money to buy a Ryzen 5 and an Intel 1060, my friend. But what Dave mentioned is accurate. I recall that this game often had optimization problems for many users, so it might not always be solvable. If I had to suggest something, I'd recommend torrenting the game (for learning) and running it outside of Steam or similar services.

I was considering that specific GPU, though it would be better with a Ryzen 3 1200 based on price changes.

Choose the Ryzen 5 or higher for real durability—it’ll hold up well for several years and keep up with current standards for 2 to 5 years. I might have gotten a Ryzen 3, but I saved up until I could afford my current setup and I’m really glad I did.
