About eight days back, my five-year-old Steam account was compromised or locked. In the middle of the night, an intruder attempted to connect from a Russian machine. Later, I noticed the emails. There were two messages containing a code for remote access that I hadn’t used. Within four to five minutes, there were roughly four Steam messages. The final one confirmed my email had been replaced, and it included a code. It instructed me to click a link to secure my account, which I did right away. Before that, I’d tried accessing the account without success. I attempted to reset my password, but when I did, the system warned it was likely a hacker’s attempt and suggested I lock the account immediately. Earlier, I had tried to recover my forgotten password, only to find emails were sent but not delivered—suggesting they might have been intercepted. I promptly changed my email password. That night none of my devices were powered on, so it couldn’t be from me. I checked both main computers for signs, but everything looked clean. I contacted Steam support using a different email to open a ticket, providing all requested details—my account name, the email used, proof of purchase via PayPal, and records of games bought. It has been over a week with no response. After a few days, I messaged Gaben at Valve, but received no reply. I use LastPass for each site, changing passwords regularly. I don’t have friends on Steam, never shared personal info, and feel completely betrayed. Losing access—and possibly more than $2,000 worth of games—is devastating. I’m considering legal action, as this feels like grand theft. Have others faced similar issues with their Steam accounts? Could Linus and Luke discuss Steam security and their poor support? It’s as if a part of me has been stolen. If I can’t regain my account, I’ll keep sharing my frustration online. I spent a lot on games and a machine, but now it’s unusable. PS: I didn’t notice any other signs that my email was compromised.

Steam is recognized for its poor support. You’ll likely need to wait until Gaben responds after he gets out of his stack of funds.

Stay committed to your PCs, handle things responsibly, and be honest with Steam. Accept any consequences without denying wrongdoing. Patience is key—wait for Steam’s response. Set up a support account if you haven’t already, and create a detailed support ticket about your issue. Meanwhile, take some time to exercise or go for a jog to stay fit.

It took me a month to recover my dad's Steam account, so make sure you have evidence of the games and recent purchases; that should clear things up.

I believe I wasn’t careless. There’s no way I’m responsible for anything wrong, and I won’t make it happen again. Maybe I should wait a month? That’s what I call terrible patience. My password combined numbers, letters, and caps—not just all caps. It doesn’t make sense how this could have occurred. I’m working hard to unwind and stop thinking about Steam’s poor support.

I miss the days when you had to purchase physical media and could enjoy files on your own device without relying on the internet.
