I'm trying to set up Linux Mint 17.3 on a flash drive and then transfer it to an external hard drive with existing partitions. I have two other partitions that already contain OS X Lion files in Mac OS Extended Journaled format, and the drive uses a GUID partition map. When installing on the third partition, I encounter an error. Using the back and continue options takes me back to the partition manager. I need advice on resolving this issue.

Also check if you're attempting to install it on sda5.

I haven't experimented with glared. It seems I'm likely using sda5.
