It might be related to an app interfering—TeamViewer likely hides the Desktop background. Windows 8.1 seems unstable, and updating to version 1 could resolve the issue.

It's confirmed the activation works. The 8.1 version definitely feels unusual. These issues only started after the upgrade. I'll review the installed programs—it makes sense given the problems appeared on both devices after copying files between them.
