Issue with Windows 8.1 installation or performance
I recently acquired my dad's old Samsung 840 Pro SSD (128 GB) after he needed a solid storage solution because of its compact size (which works well for me). We've often faced challenges installing Windows on it, frequently receiving warnings like 'Windows can not be installed on this partition, disk, etc.' This time, the installation succeeded once we reformatted the partition and removed all connections. The initial eight installations proceeded smoothly—though it was slower than with other SSDs, which installed Windows much faster. Installing updates proved tricky, so I waited until I reached 8 hours of download speed (50 Mb/s) before they completed. Eventually, I downloaded and installed the 8.1 update from the store, which worked without issues. Once everything was set up, I logged into Windows and restarted my PC. I connected the other drives via SATA cables—one remained active with the OS still running—and tried booting again. The BIOS displayed 'Windows Boot Manager,' which I knew shouldn't be needed after OS installation. I attempted to use it, but it launched the Windows loading screen with the MSI logo visible. After a brief pause, an error appeared: 'bad_system_config_info.' It suggested either corrupted registry files or faulty RAM. I confirmed my RAM was fine since I didn’t encounter this issue when booting from the old drive. I then switched the SATA cables to the SSD and resolved the error. However, I still received a 'Windows installation failed' message, preventing direct boot from the SSD. Anyone have any advice on resolving this? Also, I plan to try again and share the outcome. No improvements were made otherwise.
Thanks for the response. It wouldn't start either way; I updated the firmware and reinstalled Windows 8 as a boot drive, which seemed to resolve the issue. No problems now. I plan to apply the updates then move to Windows 8.1. If I encounter the same problem again, I'll let you know I did it. So far, the firmware update appears to have helped.
