Issue with Windows 8 updates
I chose to upgrade to Windows 8.1 since it felt better than Windows 10. While setting it up, I completely wiped the hard drive so none of my Windows 10 files would remain on the new system (you get to pick which drive). After installation, everything seemed fine—no drivers were detected, and even my graphics card didn’t show any. The main problem started when I looked for updates. It took about an hour before it showed up, but when I tried to start the updates, nothing happened and the Windows Update window just closed. Every time I interacted with the update section, it wouldn’t respond. I’m not keen on going back to Windows 10, so I’m asking: Are there any other ways to update without freezing? Would completely formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows 8.1 be an option? How would I do that?
Details:
- Ryzen 5 1600 6x 3.2GHz
- Asus B350-F Gaming Mainboard
- AMD Radeon HD 8490 (updates will be applied later)
- 4GB HyperX Fury DDR4 2666 MHz
- Seagate 1 TB HDD 6000rpm
Requires Windows 10 to receive official support for Ryzen processors.
Downloading drivers for Windows 7 is possible; Ryzen works with Windows 7, including newer Ryzen models (except Vega GPU). Check ASRock and your motherboard's chipset for compatible options. A better approach might be to run Windows 8.1 on another machine, update everything there, and then transfer the drive to your new Ryzen system. Only install the missing drivers instead of everything. I moved Windows 7 from a friend’s old PC to my new Ryzen setup a few days ago—though it wasn’t the simplest process, it worked in the end. So upgrading to Windows 8.1 seems feasible too.
