Hey everyone, I just set up a new PC: an MSI B85 G43 gaming i5 4690K with AMD 7970 reference, 8GB RAM, Fury Storage SSD (850GB), a 1TB WD Green HDD, an Ax860 H80i cooler. When I run programs, they all work in 32-bit but my Windows is 64-bit. The game still runs in 32-bit, but I’m confused about why. Can someone help me?

I purchase a single game on Steam, but once installation completes it runs in 32-bit instead of 64-bit, and I can't install the DLC because it needs a 64-bit version.

I understand you need to install the software in either 64 or 32 bit version.

You can adjust your Steam settings to use a specific architecture if you're stuck between 32-bit and 64-bit. Check the Steam client options for your platform and select the desired bit version.

32 or 64 bits are fine. It doesn’t depend on your operating system. Many of my games and programs run in 32-bit, while my OS is 64-bit.

Windows 64-bit includes WOW64 technology, essentially running Windows on top of a 32-bit operating system. This setup allows seamless operation of 32-bit applications without any emulation or conversion, maintaining full performance. The key factors are: the system provides all necessary files for 32-bit software, and a routing mechanism that sends 32-bit calls to the appropriate 32-bit APIs. At the hardware level, this means a 64-bit processor can interpret 64-bit instructions as if they were 32-bit, preserving native execution. This results in no loss of speed or efficiency. The CPU supports both architectures, enabling smooth transitions and optimal use of resources.

When a 32-bit program runs on a 64-bit system, it receives instructions that match its native format. The CPU processes them directly, avoiding translation steps. This seamless integration is made possible by the system’s design and the processor’s capabilities.

In contrast, games often require 64-bit versions to access larger memory spaces, but this doesn’t automatically boost performance. The real advantage remains the expanded address space, allowing more RAM to be utilized without hitting traditional limits.
