Turn off the machine and restart it, then click the update check button. This often helps get it running smoothly.

I've repeated it multiple times, but the outcome remains unchanged.

I need to consider whether the setup process failed somehow.

It's doable, but I've tested two Toshiba laptops with the same problem. My own machine, your friend's desktop and laptop, plus another friend's laptop all had the same issue. I suspect it might be related to Toshiba, but I'm still figuring it out. I don't want to be silly, lol.

If every other time you've done it seems to be fine, then its at least not the install media. Give the install another shot. Sometimes things just dont go well. Let me know if you need or want more help, and let me know if that solves your problem.

Get the "System Update Readiness Tool" from Microsoft. It’s a big file (over 500MB). I’ve used it twice recently to resolve Windows Update issues on Win7 systems at work.

I've encountered the same issue with Windows Update today, even though it was running on an existing system. After leaving it running for a few hours, it completed successfully.
