Issue with thermal paste failure
Here you can observe the thermal grizzly contact & seal for am5.
@ohio_buckeye: it looks like the thermal grizzly kryonaut doesn't spread easily. Not being very experienced and worried about mistakes, I checked the paste on the CPU and then applied it automatically... maybe I should reapply it once more and use noctua thermal paste or consider Artic MX-4, as you suggested—mx-6 is worse by comparison?
It's worth noting, though, that what it isn't is evident from your initial image upload. Those only display the usual MB retention system. And thermal grizzly paste is a benchmark product, not a daily one. It dries quicker and requires more frequent reapplication compared to options like Noctua NH2.
My 9800x3d is running at high 30s with a -15 all core negative offset on a 360mm AIO. The environment isn’t much different here in Bristol, UK. An hour of continuous testing won’t raise temperatures beyond 70 degrees, so my system stays within a very narrow temperature range regardless of the load. O11D Evo case with all Corsair link fans at 50% speed. Edit: I’m using mx4 and the thin spread method.
This makes me question everything, not just because of your words, but because it suggests either my setup was poorly done or the temperatures vary greatly between chips. That would definitely make me think about returning my 9800x3d, though I’m sure they’ll say no to the RMA... I understand you have an AIO, but the Noctua cooler is marketed as one of the top air coolers, so seeing these 98°C readings under full multi-core load isn’t ideal... :-(
