The top antivirus software varies by needs and system requirements, but popular options include Norton, McAfee, Bitdefender, and Kaspersky.
AvG performs well for anti-virus protection and is free to use. Kaspersky also delivers solid results. Spybot and Malwarebytes focus more on anti-malware rather than traditional antivirus. If you're looking for strong anti-malware solutions, Malwarebytes stands out significantly compared to Spybot. CCleaner excels at cleaning registry files and removing unnecessary items after program removal. Avast is another reliable antivirus option. For the best experience, especially with anti-malware, Malwarebytes consistently outperforms Spybot. No matter which product you choose, always keep definitions updated and refresh them regularly.
I rely on Kaspersky and Malwarebytes. I've been using Kaspersky since 2010 and never faced any problems. It's an excellent antivirus solution.
AVG isn't a strong antivirus solution. I handle more infected PCs with AVG than any other antivirus available. Windows Defender or Security Essentials work well enough for users with moderate internet habits. Be mindful of the sites you visit and the links you click, and it should perform adequately. Running a malware remover occasionally will help maintain good protection. If you're considering buying one, ESET NOD32 stands out as the top choice on the market.
I rely on Microsoft Security Essentials (free) and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro. The free edition works just fine, but the paid version offers real-time and scheduled scans. I've never encountered any malware on my system, and if it appears, it notifies me right away and isolates it until I approve the action. Note: I also use Rkill for stubborn viruses, typically for clients.
I began avoiding AV around two weeks ago, and the small improvements in performance are definitely worthwhile. However, my main use of that machine is just to browse the web, so the benefit might be limited. I recommend trying Avast or Defender for free.
These ideas are very risky unless you're a highly skilled IT professional. They won't protect you from all threats, since even safe sites can get infected and new weaknesses are found in software, routers, firewalls, etc. Usually they get fixed quickly, but without extra protection like antivirus, you remain exposed. If you're only browsing the web, the performance gain is minimal compared to the danger. I recommend at least installing a free antivirus such as MSE or Windows Defender on Windows 8/8.1/10.
