I acquired a fresh PC build. AMD Ryzen 7 5800X paired with Asrock B550M Steel Legend. Two kits of Corsair Vebegance RGB Pro (4x8GB) 3600 C16. When XMP is enabled, the system fails to start. Removing one stick of RAM from the closest CPU slot resolves the issue. Setting RAM speed to auto (2133MHz) allows full utilization of all four slots. Everything is brand new. I experimented with other RAM brands and found the same problem. With active XMP and manual frequency adjustment to 3066MHz, it boots properly. Is the issue with the motherboard or CPU?
I got really specific about memory modules, learned the lesson the hard way. My 5700G won’t boot with the old Samsung C-DIE chips I used; I found some tiny parts and it worked instantly. With Corsair Vengeance they use many chips on one stick, so your first set might not match the other. Make sure to verify that. My advice is to swap the memory kits and opt for a 2x16GB instead.
Recent bios updates appear, two suppliers tested three RAM types, and only A1 slots boot when maxed frequency reaches 3200MHz with XMP enabled. A2, B1, and B2 slots use RAM at 3600MHz rated speeds. The CPU was swapped to another 5800X (my previous model), but the issue persists. With the same capacity, G.SKILL Ripjaws V 3600 C18 works with XMP on, though not in newer models even with the older 5800X.
Insert only one unit into slot A2. Choose XMP or manual overclocking. If the reboot is acceptable, turn it off and connect the remaining units. The manual recommends a maximum speed of 2993 MHz for 3600 MHz clocks, thanks to the strong memory controller.
I've already tried this; that's why I realized slot A1 can't support XMP speed while others can. I used the same motherboard and CPU with GSKILL RAMs that are almost identical, but they work fine in all four dimming modes. However, when I installed Corsair RAM into this setup, it didn't function properly with XMP. Swapping the memory slots and using the CPU that originally came with GSKILL RAMs also didn't resolve the issue with XMP.
You understand the setup rules by checking the visual guide. For Ryzen MOMOs, connect devices in the correct sequence—A2 for one stick, A2&B2 for two, etc. Remember that only single-rank modules fit properly in four slots. If you use a dual-rank module, performance will be reduced. Use cpuz to inspect the chipset and rank (if Windows boots). Search for "dram manuf" and "ranks" for details.
