Initially, I wanted to mention that I've been looking for other forums and YouTube videos regarding my issue. None of them matched the exact situation I had. Unlike others, I didn’t experience FPS drops or excessive heat. My frame rates stayed steady between 60 and 120fps (varies with the game), and temperatures never went above 75°C on either the CPU or GPU.
Two days ago, I began noticing stuttering while playing Witcher 3 at ultra settings. At that time, I had played for over 60 hours without any problems. I tested other games to check if the stutters continued; they did. The lag was consistent with stable frames and normal temperatures.
Points to consider:
- 3440/1440 resolution with G-Sync active
- My system had ant-killer sprayed in the room the day before the stuttering started, but it wasn’t near the computer. Would this cause other issues like FPS drops or failure to boot?
- The system boots normally.
- Reducing the shadow setting slightly lessened the stuttering.
- Stress tests on GPU and CPU passed without issues.
- Reinstalling the operating system onto a fresh NVMe worked, but drivers reinstalled from DDU still caused the problem.
- I found significant fluctuations in GPU core clock speeds between 1850-600, which made the stutter very noticeable. I’m unsure if this is typical; it’s something I’ve never seen before.
- Latency ranged from 10 to 17 ms depending on the game.
[Update]
I rolled back my Windows Update, and some games like Witcher 3 and Middle-Earth stopped stuttering significantly. It still does at the start of a battle or when entering new areas with many enemies, but it stabilizes after a few seconds. I’m not sure if this was a coincidence or if there’s a deeper cause. Still frustrating because I invested so much for a system that shouldn’t have these minor performance problems.
[Update]
I completely disabled Windows Game Mode via regedit, which eliminated the stuttering and returned to normal performance. I also switched drivers from Game Ready to Studio, and GPU coil whining decreased while FPS and temperatures remained stable. I’m now updating again since others with similar issues have reported much better results.
I rolled back my Windows Update.
Just did a Windows update and now I'm stuck here. I'll try going back to check.
