I set up Windows 8.1 today and selected the option to save files during the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. With 90% of my 1TB HDD occupied, I expected a nearly empty drive. After booting up for the first time, only 392GB of space remained. I couldn’t locate any folders holding the missing 600GB–500GB of data. The biggest folder I found was “windows.old” (23.5GB), which I can’t delete. Any assistance would be appreciated! Here’s a screenshot of my C:/ directory with hidden folders visible.

Many updates will come from existing programs. You need to adjust the security settings in the Windows.old directory to allow complete removal.

The size of your "My Backups" folder depends on the files it contains.

To begin, locate Disk Cleanup by pressing the Start button and viewing the picture of it. Enter "Disk Cleanup" in the search field, then select it from the results. When asked to pick a drive, choose the one you just installed Windows on and confirm. In the cleanup window, go to the Disk Cleanup tab and click Clean up system files. If prompted again, select the same drive and click OK. Check the box for Previous Windows installations and any additional options you wish to apply, then click OK. Click Delete Files in the message that appears.

It occurred to me that my system was regularly creating backup copies after each installation.
