what does the error indicate?
whether the app requires an android device or a pc.
if it's a pc, is it using an ssd since there doesn't appear to be any hdd available?

It's likely your phone isn't getting enough power for the drive, which causes it to display random content. As @Colif inquired, what does the drive look like when connected to a PC?

Furthermore, it would be useful to know the exact device running the Android. Some mobile phones need to use a particular format on external drives and USB devices. This could cause your "need to format" alert and you might be required to let the phone format it based on its specifications. You may not have flexibility in choosing the format.
