They seemed frustrated with the Apple, insisting it needed a new drive and labor, estimating 130 hours to fix it. I’m planning to switch to an SSD instead.

the cost was 80 dollars for opening the shell and removing a drive, honestly apple was nice and i installed my own ssd while they assisted for free. typing this on my new laptop is like a dream. thanks for the help, Ryan.
