Issue with Ram slots not functioning properly.
Issue with Ram slots not functioning properly.
Almost new PC with used Ryzen 5 3600 and new MSI B550 Pro VDH Wi-Fi. Both RAM sticks are functional but only one can be used at a time. Placing RAM in any slot other than A1 prevents booting. Fixing the issue by resetting CMOS twice restored functionality. After updating drivers, BIOS, and reinstalling RAM in A2 and B2, it worked. Switching back to A1 succeeded. Trying A1 and A2 also worked fully. Increasing RAM speed caused frequent BIOS freezes, forcing shutdown. This happened twice before removing A2, which then booted properly. Windows 11 installation is incomplete. Possible problems may involve RAM compatibility or BIOS settings.
Test each stick separately in a slot that functions.
Run memtest86+
It boots from a usb stick and doesn’t rely on windows.
You can download it here:
Memtest86+ | The Open-Source Memory Testing Tool
Memtest86+ is a sophisticated, free, open-source, standalone memory tester for 32- and 64-bit systems (supports UEFI & BIOS)
memtest.org
Certain motherboards may enable memtest from the tools menu in the BIOS.
If you manage to complete a full pass without any errors, your RAM should be fine.
Should each stick function properly, try running them together in the slots suggested by your motherboard manual.
If the RAM isn’t from the same matched package, you’ll need to address additional issues.
You might need to increase voltage and accept a slower speed.
I notice the computer functions well with just A1 after updating the drivers and even the BIOS through that method when I added the second RAM in the A2 slot it operated but would crash whenever I tried to increase the speed in BIOS. Over time the A2 stopped working and I returned to using only A1. No other combination has worked either. Also, at one point A1 stopped functioning but I managed to fix it.
I haven't used the memtest 86+, but both rams work and come from the same set. I've booted Windows fully using each ram individually. Before, it would cycle through then fail to boot with debug lights off, but now it boots normally when I use A2 and B2. The same happens with other combinations.
I put A2 and B2 back in again and saw a CPU light, so I re-seated the CPU—it was my first time doing that. After taking off the fan, the CPU popped out with it. After reseating, no pins were bent. I loosened the heatsink and now the Dram light is working again when I'm in A2 and B2.
After that didn't work, I tried one stick in each slot. All slots booted with one stick, but when I swapped in another to dual channel, they didn't test the second stick alone and it failed in every slot, causing the Dram light to turn on. What confuses me is that both had worked separately before. Since I don't have extra RAM to try it with, I think this might be the issue now.
Have you considered starting from A1 and B1 at once? It seems like a potential hardware problem.
