When I link my HDD to the PSU SATA cable, it fails to activate. The PSU is a cougar gx modular model, and I've used three different SATA cables—each with 8 pins (5 to real, 3 or 4 connectors in series)—but none of them work.
I've also tried connecting the HDD to an external PSU (transformer from 220v to 12v, then a molex to SATA), and it functions properly.
Is there something missing?

The SATA cables you have are the ones included with the power supply unit.

Yes, they are. The PSU includes four 8-pin connectors for SATA, with three being unused and only five having actual connections.
