Issue with processor overheating following recent GPU upgrade.
PC specifications: Ryzen 5 5600x stock CPU cooler, RTX 3070 2x8, 16GB DDR4 3200/750W, Thermaltake Toughpower PSU. My friend bought an RX 7800XT to swap his RTX 3070. After running DDU, installing drivers, and launching a game, he experienced frame drops, thermal throttling, and even low video settings with the GPU running at a cool 40°C. When we tried the GPU in his PC (Ryzen 7800X3D), it worked fine. He then reinstalled the RTX 3070, ran DDU again, updated drivers, and when the PC started up, the CPU was at 95°C on the desktop with minimal load. I suggested he upgrade to a new CPU, which he did by returning the RX 7800XT and planning to buy a Ryzen 7700X microcenter bundle. We searched online for fixes but had no success. Any suggestions on what might be wrong or how to resolve this? Thanks.
Recent issues have prompted similar concerns. Upgrading the cooler and verifying installation might be beneficial. Regarding the microcenter bundle, the GPU replacement seems driven by performance needs—RTX 3070 remains strong in 2025, but a CPU upgrade could be more practical depending on your gaming setup.
A friend lent him his previous 240mm AIO, but the mounting clips were absent, so we purchased replacements from Amazon. We made sure the cooler was correctly installed. I mentioned it wasn’t the best choice, but he needed it since the 3070 was too large and blocked the only other PCIe slot on his Micro ATX motherboard for a Wi-Fi card. The 7800xt is thinner but longer.
Do you require a Wi-Fi card? Ethernet has consistently worked well for me, possibly even better.
We exchanged the 7800XT for a fresh motherboard, processor, and RAM.
