Issue with PC shutting down directly to black screen without any issues.
I need some help with a problem I'm facing with my PC. My computer will suddenly go black and then restart without warning. This issue seems to occur more often when playing the Steam game 'Rust', though there doesn't appear to be a link between low FPS and crashes. I thought it might be related to RAM, as I originally had 16GB but now have 64GB installed, yet the crashes still happen. I run 'Rust' in administrator mode alongside Steam, so I don’t think access problems are the cause. My PC is connected directly to a power outlet, not an extension cord, which makes me wonder if there’s a power issue from the mains. Would the PC restart itself or shut down if the problem was with the power supply?
I’ve checked the temperatures on both CPU and GPU after crashes—CPU reaches about 50°C (based on BIOS), and GPU around 75°C (from Task Manager). I know BIOS and Task Manager readings aren’t always perfect, but that’s all I could get.
Here’s how my system is set up:
- Intel i7-9700K @ 3.60GHz
- 64GB RAM
- GeForce RTX 2080 Ti
- 500GB SSD
- 2TB HDD
- Water cooling system
All drives seem up to date, including the GPU, so it doesn’t appear to be an outdated component. The crashes happened in a gap of about two weeks, starting around January 10th, and then they started restarting suddenly on January 29th (six crashes within 3–4 hours). Since then, the crashes have continued daily.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as this has been ongoing for the past month.
I also faced this problem. In my case, it was a faulty PSU, and changing it resolved the issue.
Does your computer not show any signs of trouble? When I experienced the same problem, it would emit a BEEP sound every hour, indicating something was amiss.
It could also be that your PSU is dirty and overheating. If that isn't the case, and it's clean, then I'd bet on it being your PSU.
If you know someone with a spare PSU or willing to lend one, think about swapping parts temporarily to check if that fixes the issue.
