PC shuts down completely only during FC26 play – need assistance identifying the cause
Hello everyone,
I’m experiencing an unusual problem where my PC abruptly powers off every time I launch FC26 (FIFA 26). The display turns black, power is cut off, yet the RAM RGB remains active. It seems like the 12V supply is failing while the 5V standby stays on, which makes me suspect a power rail issue. I have to repeatedly switch the PSU on and off to get the system to start. This behavior occurs only during gameplay, not when idle.
Details about my setup:
- GPU: RTX 3090 FE (just installed)
- CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- Motherboard: MSI B650M Mortar (latest BIOS)
- PSU: Corsair HX1000i
- RAM: G.Skill 32GB 6000MHz (operating at 5200MHz for stability)
Testing steps I’ve tried:
✔️ GPU stability – Furmark at 1440p for an hour showed no problems, temperatures and hotspots normal.
✔️ CPU temperatures during gameplay stayed between 70–72°C (7800X3D), so overheating isn’t the issue.
✔️ PSU cables – I used the Corsair Premium PSU Cable Kit, checked and reattached all PCIe connections.
✔️ BIOS & drivers – Updated motherboard firmware, refreshed GPU drivers, verified chipset drivers.
The problem remains: only during FC26 does the whole PC shut down instantly, but RAM stays on. No BSOD, no errors, no logs—similar to a PSU failure.
Possible causes I’m considering:
- GPU power spikes
- PSU protection activation
- GPU power cable fault
- Motherboard malfunction
- Specific issue with FC26 or the game itself
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
Motherboard: MSI B650M Mortar (latest BIOS installed)
For clarity, please mention the BIOS version you're using for your motherboard.
PSU: Corsair HX1000i
How much is the PSU?
RAM: G.Skill 32GB 6000MHz kit (operating at 5200MHz for stability)
Do you have a link to the RAM kit you're using? Are the RAM slots A2 and B2 populated?
Regarding the CPU, what cooling solution are you employing?
GPU: RTX 3090 FE (just installed)
Define recent – were you working with something else before? Did you use DDU before replacing your system?
Since the RTX 3000 series requires significant power spikes, experts recommended overprovisioning your PSU beyond just purchasing a solid unit. In your case, they suggested a 1.5KW reliable model. That’s a strong recommendation.
For those with an RTX 3080, they advised considering a 1.2KW reliable unit. Your current setup falls short of both cards, even though the PSU is brand new.
It’s the 2023 Corsair HX1000i with about 500 hours of use, purchased second-hand yet still in good condition. My configuration includes an MSI B650M Mortar running BIOS 7D76vAN4, a NZXT 240mm AIO for the 7800X3D, and 32GB G.Skill RAM at 5200MHz in A2/B2. I recently switched from an RTX 3080 (no problems before) to an RTX 3090 FE and used DDU before installing it. Cinebench runs smoothly, Furmark stays stable even for an hour, and temperatures are within limits (CPU max around 85°C). The only shutdowns occur during heavy combined CPU and GPU workloads, where the system restarts normally, but after extended gaming sessions, it powers down completely—RAM RGB remains on, requiring me to switch the PSU. This behavior suggests a potential PSU tripping protection issue under sudden spikes or heat stress, which aligns with the 3080 experience. I’m considering an RMA to confirm a PSU fault. What are your thoughts?
