Issue with Nvidia 5060 LP not drawing power from external supply in SFF build
Hey everyone. I've been playing around with an m720q & an m90q gen 3 The m90q is the current project and I'm trying to get the 5060 lp to run in the system.
I have tried various external power options and each results in the board getting into windows but running extremely jerky, or simply rebooting after a few minutes.
Things I've tried:
Ender 3 psu 350w 24v -> buck converter to 12v ~15a -> 8 pin adapter
Lenovo 135 & 230w chargers -> same buck converter -> 8 pin adapter
Pc PSU 400w (older and had to rewire the 12v wires to a new 8 pin adapter) (said up to 22a on the 12v supply)
Dedicated 12v psu that can push up to 50A to 8 pin adapter.
I verified the voltage with each attempt. The GPU should be receiving the expected 12v on the 3 12v pins and enough amps.
In Windows or Batocera the m90q seems to be the worse off. I was able to load FurMark once and the wattage displayed was very low, like 15 watts.
It should at least be pulling the 70 watts from the PCI-E slot
The m720q (older) will load Batocera and play some games but the performance is worse than the 3050 I had been using.
Maybe there is an issue with the pci 8x riser, maybe how it's handling everything. But the 3050 works fine so maybe not.
I did recently read somewhere that because the 2 power supplies are not on the same ground it could cause a back feeding issue?
I may try to tie both to the same ground when i next mess with it.
Maybe something in the m720q bios is somehow slightly better? Idk, I'm stuck.
For the pc I have the 230 & 300 watt bricks, both act the same.
System is smooth with the 3050 gpu & i5-12500 CPU. (non-T variant)
Consider sharing the specifications of the RTX3050 and RTX5060 you're using. These details can help with the conversation.
For discussion purposes, both cards have different power consumption ratings.
Also, have you verified that your system is running the most recent BIOS update for your SFF platform?
I understand both models have varying TDP requirements, which is why I'm aiming to provide the 5060 with additional power. The 3050 only needs 70 watts through the PCI-E slot, while the 5060 requires more than that. These compact systems lack standard cables, so I’m looking for a suitable workaround for the power challenge. Regarding BIOS, I haven’t tested it yet, but these models are built for 12th generation CPUs and have limited extra hardware options, making a BIOS update uncertain.
The 5060 is designed for 145 watts, which means it requires additional power. These compact PCs lack standard cables, so I’m looking for a creative way to address the power challenge. This might be worth checking out; https://www.reddit.com/r/sffpc/comments/...kpack_mod/ GPU in use is this one: https://www.palit.com/palit/vgapro.php?i...60F&tab=ga or the non-OC version: https://www.palit.com/palit/vgapro.php?i...60F&tab=ga but it draws a similar amount of power as the RTX5060 you’re working with.
Is there any power connector on the m90q for SATA devices? I noticed adapters that change SATA power connectors to PCI 8 pin. It could be useful if such power is needed.
I also tried that, but it didn't work. I discovered a 8pin adapter for SATA. However, this could cause my total power consumption from the CPU and GPU to reach 275 watts, which isn't a problem now since I've purchased a 300-watt power supply. But the power cables used for the SATA connection are very thin. I think I'd be damaging something trying to force that power through the narrow ribbon cable. I decided against it anyway because I still plan to use the SATA connection for an HDD.
A solid decision. The performance of adapters is usually lacking, and numerous cases involve them overheating during GPU operation.
I'm checking more around and thinking it might be that the two power supplies have separate ground paths. This is the same problem with four different supplies, so it could be a common power issue or something with the cards. I should try putting the card in another PC to see if it works, but I really don't want to take my other machines apart... ugh.
I'm going to rewire the adapter when I get home and ground everything to the main PSU. See if that fixes the problem.
I'm back at square 1
Perhaps a PSU that powers the main board and GPU together would be better if available or can be connected as one unit.
I tested two different power supplies with the grounds connected, which seems to help with electrical noise and grounding, but it didn't resolve the issue.
I also tried adding a capacitor to address voltage drops, though it didn't change the outcome.
When I open the system and run FURMARK, I notice the card reaches about 42 watts before the software crashes or restarts, while idle it shows around 11 watts.
With the 3050 model, idle power is between 18-20 watts, but it handles full load at 70 watts and operates normally.
