Issue with new SSD device
Issue with new SSD device
I just acquired a 2TB SSD to enhance my boot storage since my system supports PCIe gen 4, while the previous drive was gen 3. I also needed additional capacity and the original boot drive was a 1TB Corsair Force MP510. I now have a Kioxia 2TB PCIe gen4 unit which performs significantly better. While researching cloning procedures, I discovered Macrium Reflect, a tool that allows OS cloning while still booting from an old SSD. I found out the drive is being properly recognized by Windows and shows nearly the full 2TB capacity, though part remains unallocated. I attempted to partition and expand the unallocated section, but the system refused to proceed. I tried using a USB stick with the Windows installer, but it still treats each partition as distinct and blocks any changes to the unallocated space. I’m considering a full reset of the drive to consolidate everything into one unified storage, though I’m unsure how to do this without accessing advanced settings in Windows or the USB installer.
I discovered the method via the command prompt with admin privileges and plan to install Windows there to test it.
Partitioning and its impact on Windows recovery can be quite frustrating. Recently, I managed to fix all these issues using a USB stick with Minitool Partition Wizard. The main advantage is that it allows not just basic cloning but also moving and resizing partitions, fine-tuning the Windows recovery partition, converting MBR to GPT for larger drives, and other benefits—ensuring everything stays organized while keeping all data safe and Windows functioning normally. https://www.partitionwizard.com/help/ This tool truly saved me after about 24 hours of troubleshooting.
You're referring to how the partitions are placed after a clone. It seems the exact positioning might vary depending on the setup. Likely, you didn't want to expand the clone to match your old SSD size. Generally, combining the unallocated space with C: in Disk Management works best. Just make sure it appears at the end. There are many tools available to assist even if it doesn't go directly to the front.
