Issue with Minecraft not running fully due to insufficient GPU usage.
I face a significant problem with Minecraft; it’s completely unplayable.
My PC specifications:
Storage/Drive – SAMSUNG SSD 980 NVMe M.2 1TB
MainBoard – Asus ROG Maximus XI Hero Gaming 1151 ATX Z390
Power Supply – BeQuiet Dark Power Pro 11 850 Watt ATX Platinum
OS – Windows 10 Pro 64Bit 21H1
CPU – INTEL Core i7 8700k
GPU – GeForce GTX 1080 Ti OC 11GB
Memory – 2x16GB DDR4 3200MHz
Display/Monitor – 2560x1440 165Hz Gsync
Minecraft graphics are set to maximum.
I have OptiFine installed for Minecraft 1.16.5.
For the Minecraft launcher, I use javaw.exe instead of the built-in Java.
In the NVIDIA ControlPanel, all graphics settings remain at maximum.
I previously played Minecraft on Windows 1909 with those exact configurations, achieving 70 to 140 FPS using OptiFine and the SUSE shader pack.
Now I’ve cleaned up my Windows 21H1 installation again, keeping the same settings, but Minecraft runs at only 30 to 70 FPS.
I have reinstalled Minecraft and Java multiple times, changing GPU drivers several versions, yet the performance remains poor.
Typically, when playing Minecraft, my GPU operates near its temperature limit (84°C), but now it stays cool between 50°C and 70°C, with only a 40% to 70% usage.
In short, Minecraft isn’t utilizing my GPU effectively—it’s not reaching its full capacity.
I also play other games, but Minecraft is the only one where my GPU behaves incorrectly.
After numerous attempts to resolve this on my own, I now have no clear solution left.
Ensure you have the most recent BIOS update for your motherboard. After obtaining the latest driver from Nvidia's support page and saving it to your desktop, use DDU to remove your GPU driers, then restart in Safe Mode and reinstall the driver manually via an elevated command—right-click the installer and select Run as Administrator.
Why did you refer to the bios version? It’s important here. I believe I’m using the latest stable release and won’t upgrade to a beta. Also, I’ve already tried reinstalling the graphics driver several times, even different versions, but it hasn’t helped. Of course, I used DDU for that.
I've updated to the newest BIOS version.
Using the latest STABLE Nvidia driver - 466.27, no noticeable changes.
Game performance remains stable at 30-50 FPS.
GPU utilization stays between 30-60%.
My CPU is running at 72°C, while the GPU stays around 56°C.
It seems something isn't working properly here.
Exactly what I did, the issue isn't the shader or OptiFine—it's Minecraft itself, Java, or Windows!
The standard Minecraft version has identical performance problems!
And again, I can play any game without trouble; it's just Minecraft that's really bad.
