Issue with Media USB 3.0 connection on M5A97 R2.0 board
I’m enhancing my older AMD FX AM3+ setup. Although it’s outdated, I rely on it for daily coding tasks because I value efficiency and compatibility. Previously, the board I was using was too restrictive, so I opted to replace it with a different motherboard (M5A97) that I had stored away. This new board supports 32GB DDR3 2133 RAM, SATA 6GB ports instead of 3GB, and includes an onboard Asmedia USB 3.0 port—features the previous model lacked. I transferred my SSD to this system and everything functioned smoothly. All drivers loaded except for video and USB 3.0. I installed the GTX 1660 Ti, which performed excellently.
The issue arose after adding Asmedia 1042 USB 3.0 drivers from ASUS. Only one USB 3.0 port worked properly; the other appeared as an unrecognized device in Device Manager. Attempts to force install failed repeatedly. I tried updating drivers via the usual method but encountered obstacles. I’m concerned about installing drivers manually due to fear of system instability and potential BSODs.
I searched online for similar experiences and found several forum discussions about this controller. The advice there suggested updating both drivers and firmware. Since I’ve never updated firmware on a motherboard component before, I’m unsure if it’s safe. I also questioned the legitimacy and security of the Asmedia firmware, wondering if station-drivers is reliable.
Now I’m weighing whether to proceed with the firmware update or consider purchasing a USB add-on card as a simpler solution. The malfunctioning port makes me suspect hardware issues rather than just driver/firmware problems.
