Issue with low frame rate and increased integrated graphics when connected to an external monitor.
Hello everyone,
I’m not entirely sure if this is the correct place for my question. I recently purchased a 1440p 144hz AOC 27G2U monitor and connected it to my laptop via HDMI 1.4. This means I can’t take full advantage of the 144Hz setting, since the laptop port doesn’t support HDMI 2.0 or higher. Still, I’ve experienced very low frame rates while gaming on this monitor, even when using 1080p resolution. The game I’m playing is CSGO, which should be manageable on my GTX 1050 at 1440p. I’ve adjusted all settings to their lowest possible levels without any changes, and even lowered the resolution to 1080p, I managed around 50–60 FPS. However, when I played directly on my laptop screen at 1080p, I got 180–200 FPS or more.
This led me to suspect that the low FPS isn’t related to resolution or in-game settings. Upon checking Task Manager, I found that usage is evenly split between my built-in graphics card (Intel UHD 630) and the dedicated one (GTX 1050). This only happens when using the external monitor. When I disconnect it and test on my laptop’s display, the integrated card shows near-zero usage while the dedicated card uses about 80%. In short, connecting to the external screen forces both cards to work together, which reduces performance.
I’ve tried several solutions:
- Updating drivers for both graphics cards
- Verifying resolution and refresh rate in Intel Graphics Settings Control Panel
- Using settings in csgo.exe to force High Performance GPU mode
- Adjusting Nvidia Control Panel to prioritize the dedicated card
- Setting Project mode to Second Screen Only
- Keeping the laptop lid open (as suggested by others)
- Disabling the Intel UHD 630 adapter in Device Manager
Anyone have any advice or help with this issue? Thank you!
It does use the Intel Adaptor. I should note that after posting this, I've tried closing the laptop lid completely, making the external monitor the only display. I turned off the adapter, which helped but performance was poor—even opening Windows Explorer took about 5 seconds.
Regardless, thank you for your assistance; I'll reach out to them. In the meantime, do you have any other suggestions?
