Issue with linking to Win11 network share
Hello, your issue involves connecting to a shared drive on Windows 11 Pro. You're encountering an "unknown error" and the network password isn't working after resetting. To resolve this, you'll need to use the correct login credentials. The network password is typically stored in the Windows settings under "Network & Internet → Windows Features → Network Connections." Look for the shared drive's connection details there. If you're unsure, check your account settings or contact support for further assistance.
Another Windows 11 machine installed. I tested it on various hosts using the same OS and switched between Windows 11 Home and mobile devices.
When distributing network drives on a local Windows SMB setup, pay attention to the following: Network classification determines whether shares are private or public, with distinct rules in advanced sharing configurations. Global options for all networks can affect account management. On individual machines, shared folders under Computer Management reveal access controls. Your advanced sharing preferences dictate whether login credentials are needed and if everyone is permitted access. By default, Windows tries to use local credentials when connecting via File Explorer; mismatched names but identical passwords may cause lockouts or authentication errors. For better security, enforce credentials through the 'All networks' settings in advanced networking options, then assign unique users. Testing connectivity by pinging hosts with their IP addresses helps verify network reachability. If needed, temporarily disable firewall protections on both ends to confirm basic sharing functionality. I’ve encountered these challenges recently on domain and intranet environments, so the advice is current.
Thank you for your feedback! It seems the problem is mainly related to Apple's issues. For the first machine, connecting works fine, but on the iPad it shows an "unknown error." For the second machine, checking all variables reveals different messages depending on whether credentials are disabled or a specific user is used—sometimes it says "wrong username or password," other times "wrong network password." It looks like the error messages vary, and there isn’t a clear solution found online. Have you tried confirming the network type or testing with another device?
Credential problems often happen because SMB defaults to the user's username and password on a shared network. You might attempt to include a local user with the same login and password on the host machine that’s causing issues. I haven’t used a non-Pro version of Windows since around 2013, so I can’t verify if adding a local user via Computer Management is possible.
Do you have machinename\username set up, or is this just your username? ... Generally, unless you're logging into a domain, you'll need to include targetmachinename\username as your login details. Otherwise, it will attempt to find the user on the computer you're connecting from, not the intended target machine.
email address should function properly as well, provided it’s set up correctly. It hasn’t been a long time since I checked this. Verify both sharing and security options have access to the folder you’re trying to reach. Even if it worked on one system before, those settings might still be accurate. It could be that the SMB version isn’t supported. From my last check in 2012, Vista Windows used SMB 3.0, which is a security concern. You might consider enabling SMB1 instead. To activate the SMB1 protocol, follow these steps: Open the Search Bar in Windows 10, type “Windows Features,” scroll down to “SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support,” check the box for SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support, and all other related boxes will update automatically.
