Issue with KIWI Link cable connection
Issue with KIWI Link cable connection
Hello,
I recently bought a Quest 3S and a KIWI Design Link Cable to link it with my PC. I spent some time setting everything up yesterday. Initially, I connected the Quest 3S to my PC using the KIWI cable to test functionality. I inserted the cable into the front USB 3.0 port of my PC case, and the yellow indicator on the headset turned on. Once confirmed, I removed the cable from the USB port and started downloading the Meta Quest Link app. After installing it, logging in with my account and finishing profile settings, I reached the step to connect the headset to my PC.
Later, I tried connecting via the KIWI cable again, but received a warning that the USB device wasn’t recognized. Another alert appeared: “The last USB device connected malfunctioned, and Windows doesn’t recognize it.” I attached screenshots below for reference.

Next, I connected the KIWI cable to the second USB port (USB 2.0), which showed no error but still failed to connect the headset. Then, I tried using the third USB port, which is a USB 2.0 connection—no errors, yet the headset didn’t link to the PC.
After that, I examined the motherboard’s USB ports. It has two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports. My mouse and keyboard are plugged into the Gen 1 ports, while the others remain unused. I connected the KIWI cable to the USB 3.1 Gen 2 port, but the same warning appeared: “USB device not recognized.” I also tested the Gen 1 ports on the motherboard, receiving the same error message. When I switched to the Gen 2 port, nothing changed—no errors and no headset connection.
I then tried disconnecting the mouse and keyboard from the motherboard ports and testing the front USB ports. The keyboard worked fine with no errors or sounds, even when plugged into the second 2.0 port (where I usually use my headphones). The mouse performed well on the first 2.0 front port, showing no issues or sound problems, despite the constant USB connect/disconnect noise.
I’m uncertain whether the problem lies with my PC’s USB ports, the KIWI cable, or both. As noted earlier, some ports function correctly with certain devices, while others don’t. I generally avoid using the front USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports now, as I experienced difficulties with USB sticks in the past.
I would really appreciate any advice to resolve this issue. Thank you!
My current PC configuration will be replaced with a new build in mid to late December, once the necessary parts arrive. Until then, I’m using the existing setup (all components were brand new, most purchased in mid-2019 except the GPU and CPU).

Your previous message provides two key points.
1. The USB3 port functions at least for data transfer, and likely for power as well.
2. The charger and its accompanying cable are functional for charging your Quest 3S system, though this doesn't confirm performance with data or the overall system operation.
You are encouraged to perform this test. Use the charging cable provided with the Quest 3S, disconnect it from the charger module, and connect it to a USB3 Type C port on a motherboard. It can be either Gen1 or Gen2. Now it will serve dual purposes—charging and data transfer. It might prompt Windows to display a message indicating a new device has been detected and the necessary driver is being installed.
1. Check if the device...
The issue might lie with the cable OR the Quest 3S headset. Do you have any other USB3 cable you could attempt? For instance, the headset includes a charging unit with a cable that is rumored to support both data and charging functions. I assume the headset requires USB3 speed to function properly. It's possible that the driver provided with the headset won't recognize it through any USB2 port. It might only work with USB 3 Gen1 or Gen2 ports.
I own an external hard drive enclosure, specifically the ORICO 3588US3-V1-EU-BK model, which supports USB 3.0. I placed one of my storage drives inside it. The enclosure needs both the USB cable and power adapter connected, along with the power button activated. After connecting it to my PC's USB 3.0 port, everything functioned smoothly without any errors, allowing me to access my hard drive files easily.
The Quest 3S charging cable features USB Type-C connectors on both ends. Initially, I charged the headset without issues, but to verify, I connected the Quest 3S charger to a power outlet using the provided adapter. The orange indicator lit up, confirming it was charging. After roughly five minutes, the light changed to green, indicating it was fully charged (as I had previously charged it). I then charged it directly through the adapter rather than via a PC.
This suggests the issue might lie with the KIWI Cable.
Your recent update provides two key points.
1. The USB3 port functions – at least for data transfer, and likely for power as well.
2. The charger and its accompanying cable are compatible with your Quest 3S system for charging purposes. This does not confirm functionality for data transmission, nor does it guarantee the system operates correctly.
Please consider performing this verification test. Obtain the charging cable that came with the Quest 3S, detach it from the charger module, and connect it to a USB3 Type C port on your motherboard. It doesn’t matter if it’s Gen1 or Gen2. Now it will be used for both charging and data transfer. It’s possible Windows will display a notification indicating a new device has been detected and is installing the necessary driver software.
It seems MSI released a new chipset driver update in early November. I downloaded and installed it, then used the KIWI cable with USB 3.0 without any issues. The setup for the Quest 3S was completed using the Meta Quest Link app, and the "continue" option worked properly this time. I also checked Device Manager, but didn’t find the Quest 3S directly—only "Reality Labs XRSP Interface" and "Oculus Virtual Audio Device" were listed.
