Issue with irregular pauses when using new or fast PCs (not during gaming)
I recently assembled a new PC nine months ago (the following specifications are listed). Throughout its operation, I've encountered periods where the system would occasionally slow down by 1 to 2 seconds. The timing varies—sometimes within a short span, other times it might go unnoticed for hours. These occurrences typically arise during basic desktop tasks or when launching applications. They seem more common when starting an app or opening a new tab in Chrome, though they aren't limited to those situations. Notably, the problem doesn’t interfere with gaming.
It appears the PC’s frame rate drops significantly (often just a few frames per second) when using multiple monitors. This becomes apparent during actions like mouse movement or watching videos. The issue usually resolves after a few seconds and returns to normal. Audio remains unaffected.
Performing diagnostics is challenging due to the irregular nature of the problem. That’s why I shared this on the Systems forum, unsure what might be causing it.
Details:
- CPU: Intel Core i9-13900K
- Motherboard: MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK WIFI
- GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 4080 16GB SUPRIM X
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance CMK32GX5M2X7200C34
- SSD: WD Black SN850X 1+1+2 TB
- Power Supply: be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 1000W
- Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360
- Operating System: Windows 11 x64
- RAM overclocked to 6400MHz, other components at standard speeds.
I would increase your RAM overclock to 6200mhz or 6000mhz to check for stability, since I have a 13900k processor with RAM at 6400mhz and my system still crashes during games when it's at 6400mhz. Lowering it resolves the issues. Also, you might want to adjust the FPS caps and verify if your monitors have different refresh rates—consistent settings could help.
I'll attempt to lower the RAM speed to 6000 MHz.
I'm confused about your explanation of limiting FPS; my monitors are identical and operate at 144 Hz. It seems Windows automatically enables vsync on the desktop, which caps the FPS at 144.
