I’m struggling with severe microstuttering across all my games. I’ve tried numerous solutions to see if someone can spot the problem. Since the RTX 3080 FE was released in April 2023, my setup looked like this: CPU – Ryzen 7 5800X3D; Cooler – Noctua NH-D12L; Mobo – Gigabyte X570-I; RAM – Corsair LPX DDR4 3600; GPU – RTX 3080 FE; PSU – Corsair SF750; SSD – Gen 4 NVME (brand unknown); SSD2 – SATA; SSD3 – SATA case. Monitor: LG 27GP850-B; Mouse: Glorious Model O; Keyboard: Wooting 60HE; Mouse remote: USB Type-C KVM. I was using Windows 11 Pro 64-bit and everything ran smoothly until.
I first set up G-SYNC 101 for optimal performance, then adjusted settings to eliminate stutter in Apex Legends and other titles. Over a month, I updated drivers, changed the GPU to 4090 FE, used Logitech G Pro Superlight X, and experimented with PBO and BIOS tweaks. After a BIOS update bricked my Gigabyte board, I rolled back to default settings.
Eventually, stuttering returned—especially in Apex Legends. I noticed 1–3 FPS drops every few seconds, sometimes hitting 40+ FPS losses. Lowering resolution and graphics settings helped a bit, but the cap at 170 fps still caused issues. I tried removing the frame cap, changing power cables, reseating components, updating firmware, and even reinstalling drivers.
Despite these efforts, the problem persists. Possible causes seem to include:
- Driver incompatibility
- Windows update conflicts
- BIOS corruption after PBO attempts
- Power supply instability
- GPU or RAM issues (though tests showed no RAM faults)
- Potential thermal throttling from the cooler
I’m running out of ideas and need guidance to pinpoint exactly what’s happening. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
I noticed you experimented with many adjustments. However, disabling Fast Startup in Windows didn’t resolve the micro stuttering problems across various PC configurations. I suggest trying that approach as well. A restart is necessary for changes to apply. It’s best to revert everything to default settings except ReBAR, keep the monitor at 165Hz, and set FPS cap to 160 in NVCP, VSync and GSync enabled. You’ve already attempted this, but you changed DDU drivers and installed new chipset drivers—so you went with the most extreme settings before giving up. Why not start with a -15 offset? It’s likely to work on most processors without issues. EDIT: Also consider enabling GSync only in FullScreen mode.
@Saffsanity ok you tried alot of stuff. I'm on mobile right now so if I missed something I apologize. First of all why g-sync and vsync at the same time? Normally only choose one. For testing purposes I would disable both (also on monitor osd). Set everything to default, in nv control panel. Make sure your bios settings is stable or set to default. Disable fast boot in bios. Make sure you don't use weird programs while testing... You should be able to use either MSI afterburner or hwinfo64 for all testing (choose and run one of them). Before you installed the 4090. Did you run DDU in safe mode? If not go and do that. Choose. Shutdown for new GPU. Make sure you run the program in safe mode, It'll prompt you on first startup. Last thing would be trying GPU in another system or with another PSU or stock cables.
I appreciate the positive feedback! I aimed to explain things more clearly and quickly figured I should update the 4090 firmware. I downloaded the necessary drivers for NVIDIA, GeForce, Quadro, and Tesla. I tested them on a different monitor (LG CX 55) but noticed stuttering below the refresh rate. SSDs remained unchanged before the issue started, so they might not be the cause. I'm checking for firmware updates now and hoping it resolves the problem!
Adjusting Fast Startup in Windows isn't something I considered before. I'll give it a shot and let you know. A complete Windows reinstall didn't help, so the DDU/new chipset drivers won't solve it. I never doubted PBO was useful or tried it properly—just made sure the details were captured. If this situation gets fixed, I'll consider a significant adjustment. Previously, GSync only worked in FullScreen mode.
The power supply might not provide enough stability for the sudden voltage changes in a 4090.
Hey, do you have any news about this? I've been facing the same issue with my 4090fe and connecting my 3080ti seems to resolve it completely. My concerns also involved full system crashes. I thought it might be RAM, CPU, or motherboard, but with the EVGA 3080ti it works fine except for a strange jet engine noise during gameplay. Fixing involved checking everything you mentioned. Conditions improved when switching to a faster, smaller RAM, though only temporarily. The best solution was downgrading the GPU—currently I'm trying to figure out if it's a hardware issue or a Windows/settings conflict. Any updates? Let me know if anyone else has had success.
Awesome troubleshooting thus far. Also, I don't think this is a coincidence there's a similar thread here . Both using the same CPU and both of you seem pretty darn technically savy. (Don't interpret this as me saying the problem is the CPU though.) Are you using a riser cable with your GPU? Try this Nvidia driver from July , hopefully this was back when you didn't have issues. There is a firmware update for the RTX 4090 , but it only addresses a UEFI black screen compatibility issue. Might as well do it if your card isn't already updated, but it won't fix your issue. Also, I saw someone mention disabling fast startup. If you don't want to do that, just use Restart on the computer before testing which will be equivalent to disabling Fast Startup and Windows will not hibernate the kernel during a Restart .
