Hi there. I bring over more than three decades of hands-on experience in assembling, fixing, and programming desktop computers and laptops. I’ve physically worked on motherboards and hard drives, so I’m confident in my computer repair skills. I also enjoy doing some DIY projects to assist others. Yet, I’m facing a challenge with my machine that’s really puzzling me. After researching online and reaching out to Gigabyte support in Melbourne, Australia, they didn’t offer any guidance. I’ve always favored AMD over Intel since my first PC, an AMD DX4-100, which was recommended by a local tech expert. In 2015 I built my current setup—a Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P (Rev 2.0) board, paired with an AMD FX-8320 Black Edition CPU and 32 GB of Kingston HyperX Fury DDR3 RAM (four 8 GB modules). It runs on a Thermaltake 850W Gold power supply and uses a dual-boot setup with Windows 7 Pro alongside Windows 10 Pro across two equal partitions, keeping Windows 7 as my main OS.
The issue began about a year ago. All RAM slots report correct readings in BIOS, but when I try to boot, only 16 GB appears usable—even though the system shows 32 GB. If I swap out two of the 8 GB modules into slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4, it still reads 16 GB as usable, but only single-channel. Switching to 4 modules in slots 1 and 2 gives full 32 GB, but dual-channel mode isn’t active. I’ve also tested 8 GB (four 2 GB units), which displayed just 4 GB across both OSes. Even when I installed Windows 10 on a new Western Digital Blue SSD, the same pattern persisted.
I’ve checked every Kingston RAM module individually in each slot, but the system won’t start if I use slots 3 or 4. It boots fine with slots 1 or 2. I’ve also tried the same setup on my son-in-law’s machine—on an Asrock AM3 board, it works perfectly, showing 32 GB installed and functional. His CPU is identical to mine, yet it didn’t affect the RAM behavior.
I updated the BIOS but found it was still the same version from 2016, and no newer updates were available. I suspect there might be some dust or debris in the slots, though I’m very careful about cleaning them—using low-pressure compressed air and an electronics spray. Despite this, after nearly seven years of trouble-free operation, suddenly everything’s going wrong.
I’ve reached out to Gigabyte tech support with all the details, but they’ve been unhelpful, only recommending a fresh Windows 10 install—something I’d already completed. It feels like once your warranty ends, you’re left with no choice but to pay. I’ve looked into various fixes online: checking the BIOS settings for memory limits, trying without a pagefile, and even using different RAM configurations—but nothing changed.
I’m pretty sure the problem isn’t with the RAM or CPU; it’s likely tied to the motherboard itself. I’m struggling to figure out if the board is physically damaged or if there’s an issue with the BIOS configuration. I usually keep my system spotless, using gentle compressed air and a cleaning spray, yet this is the first time it’s malfunctioning.
I’ve considered bringing it to a local shop for help, but their rates are high, and I’m on a disability pension—making that option impractical. The BIOS interface seems confusing, and I’m hoping someone familiar with this model can offer a solution. Thanks for your time.
I own one of those boards, and I'm really impressed it's still functioning. It's a budget AM3+ model, and given how many of these were built, it's impressive. Many of the issues you mentioned stem from the fact that the motherboard is nearing its end of life, especially since you've tried another board and it worked fine. By around 2010, most motherboards were designed to last only about five years, so this one feels like a rare exception.
Try rinsing it in water by removing all heatsinks, extracting the CMOS battery, pressing the power button briefly, and clearing the CMOS for about two minutes to fully discharge the motherboard. Then wash it thoroughly with water, ensuring every part is submerged. You can submerge it in a bucket of water for an hour or two, shake off excess water, and let it dry for a day or two. This process won’t damage your board because it’s already been drained, and it works well on the boards I’ve had issues with (those that failed due to dirt buildup).
Preferably remove the socket cover first; even though dust can enter the socket on an AM3 chipset, it’s still rare. For example, on a 970 Extreme3, it only happened after I took off the cover and rinsed it—though the covers are quite fragile, so you’ll need to follow a specific method: gently pull the lever, then pull backward to release the front part, and slightly wiggle to free the back.
I’ll post a video once I try it at home. If this doesn’t help, the board is likely beyond repair—just sell it with the existing DDR3 and AMD FX components and replace it with a used Ryzen setup, which has become affordable recently. Cooler should still be usable since the mounting holes remain consistent since AM2.
AM1, AM2, and AM3 shared identical installation locations, whereas AM4 doesn't work with the older connectors by default.
I've experienced a comparable problem with an ASUS Sabretooth 990FX R2.0 and FX-4300 in my NAS. I had to swap the RAM slots to keep it running every few months. Over time, I also noticed two of my eight HDDs would disconnect periodically. It wasn't that they failed; the SATA cables (data lines) were likely the issue. After replacing all eight, the system now starts up each time. This might not be a solution, but it's worth trying. You could test running without an HDD and see if it works. The PSU might also be unstable at times—consider using a different power supply as well.
Hi, thank you for your feedback. After going through all the steps and trying various solutions, it seems the board might already be outdated. Another concern is that the audio appears to be configured correctly after using the right drivers, yet I haven’t heard any sound for about three years despite following online advice. I replaced it with an Asus Xonar DGX PCIE sound card to address this issue. If the board is indeed failing, it’s likely the RAM slots 3 and 4 are faulty—my system won’t boot when only one or both are present, but it does work with slots 1 or 2, or both. Confusing part is that regardless of the RAM type, quantity, or configuration, they all read properly in the BIOS. It would be strange if the board were failing due to those slots, yet still showing correct readings. Appreciate your understanding.
It seems like a faulty trace might be involved, likely affecting data lines rather than SPD connections. The audio chipset appears compromised, possibly indicating a poor memory trace. Fortunate that it's still functioning.
Hello, thank you for your input. I strongly prefer a different operating system and only switch to Windows 10 when necessary. I rely on it with the Classic Shell Menu. My work often involves recovering hard drives and setting up systems for others, which is why I find Windows 10 frustrating. I’ve also learned about the potential spyware in Windows 10 and have removed One Drive and Microsoft Edge to improve my security. Since Windows 7 offers a much stronger security setup, I’m cautious about using it. If the hardware is failing, it seems RAM slots 3 and 4 are likely the issue—system won’t boot with just one or both modules installed. What confuses me most is that regardless of the type or number of RAM modules I install, they all work perfectly in the BIOS. It would be strange if those slots were causing problems even though the system reads them correctly.
It often depends on the condition of the slots. I've seen boards with completely non-functional RAM slots, and others like mine. The main issue is that the RAM can't be used in those places, but the process behind it can differ. I understand this well. I changed to 10 because my system couldn't handle 7.
