Issue with gigabit internet connection.
Issue with gigabit internet connection.
Hello, I just spent two hours trying to find a fix for my issue online. I'm new to forums and haven't used them before. Recently, I switched to a gigabit internet connection, but my speeds are only 180-200 Mbps. The network card settings look correct, and the speed is listed as 1000 Mbps. I'm using new Cat6 cables and a motherboard with an Ethernet port rated for 1000 Mbps. The ISP's testing site also shows similar results. I've checked with technicians, and everything seems fine there. On my phone, disabling data and testing Wi-Fi gave me 550 Mbps, but when I tried Ethernet on my PC it was still capped at 180 Mbps. Can you help me resolve this? I'm frustrated with the slow speeds despite paying for gigabit internet.
It seems you've tested on multiple devices, but the issue still occurs elsewhere. If it's limited to one device, it could be a software problem—possibly from gaming software slowing performance. It took some time to locate the cause.
AFAIK auto-tuning should be enabled by default. One user reported it was off due to speed issues, which resolved after enabling it. Regarding the modem, it's a modem/router, and you asked if the techs performed any tests on that.
My roommates' Xbox works fine. I mentioned using the Wi-Fi on my phone, which gave speeds you'd expect over Wi-Fi. Otherwise, I have no other devices to check. The modem is gigabit ready and the technicians confirmed it with a reading of 970mbs.
The issue is related to the PC specifically. Your roommate's Xbox has a wired or wireless connection. Over wireless it seems to work, but if it's wired, the problem likely depends on the PC unless another switch is involved. If you haven't tried it, boot into safe mode with networking support and verify the speed.
Thanks for the assistance, but I enabled auto tuning and now my speeds are at 970mbs. That’s the weirdest thing—everyone says to turn it off for the rates you pay, but mine was already set and I turned it on and it worked perfectly.
