I'm operating at maximum performance with an i5 4670K CPU, R9 290 GPU, and an MSI Z97 motherboard. My system usually achieves 55-60 FPS, but sometimes it drops to 19-29 and stays there. After resetting, it recovers briefly before dropping again. Since my components aren't in a case yet, the temperature issue seems unlikely. What might be causing this?

SSAA should be configured at 2x or lower. It seems to work well when set to 1.5, and you shouldn’t run into problems on a 290 unless PhysX is causing conflicts.

It seems you're noticing a change in your game performance. The higher frame rate of 140 FPS indicates smoother gameplay, reducing lag and making movements feel more responsive. This usually means better rendering quality and can enhance immersion. It suggests your settings or hardware are working well together.

PhysX is a technology from Nvidia, though it may not run well on AMD graphics cards. This can significantly hurt your performance.

With an AMD card, PhysX computations happen on the CPU. AMD GPUs can't handle PhysX efficiently, making CPU-based execution very wasteful and usually harming your gaming experience.

on AMD cards physx is calculated by CPU, which is very weak & that's why you had bad fps. I have dedicated GPU for physx (GTX 560) & my fps never drops below, cause it's calculating physx far better than CPU. PhysX are special effects in games. Here's link if you're interested:

I'm turning it off now, but is there an alternative? Are there any items you can purchase specifically for handling the PhysX section of the game?

Using an Nvidia GPU with an AMD GPU for PhysX processing isn't officially supported and likely doesn't perform well. For best results, invest in an Nvidia GPU first. Running PhysX on the CPU offers a limited version, but owning an Nvidia GPU is the most reliable option.

Nvidia has stopped allowing unofficial support for it. The newest Nvidia drivers will turn off Physx when a non-Nvidia dedicated GPU is found. This doesn’t impact integrated GPUs, such as Intel Quicksync, but you can no longer change the drivers to work with AMD GPUs. Many people were upset and criticized Nvidia for this decision, though it wasn’t originally supported and technically broke the EULA of those drivers. Still, users can keep using the old drivers. Current Physx technology doesn’t support CPU-based Physx either. The game should automatically detect an AMD GPU and disable it. CPU Physx has been unavailable since around 2009, and Arkham Asylum was one of the final titles to include it. After that, it became purely GPU-only and will not function properly if set to use the CPU.
