Issue with flickering screen and rapid fan speed increase
Hey everyone,
I’m facing a problem with my latest build—sometimes the system shuts down completely, both during gaming and when idle on the desktop. When this occurs, all fans blast at full speed, and the PC stops responding until I turn it off manually.
Here are my specs:
CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B850-E Gaming WiFi
GPU: PNY RTX 5070 Ti 16 GB
RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB 32 GB DDR5-6000 CL28 (EXPO)
Cooling: Corsair iCUE Link Titan 360 RX AIO
Power Supply: ASUS Prime 850 W Gold (ATX 3.0)
Storage: Samsung 990 PRO 1 TB NVMe + 7.3 TB HDD
Case: Corsair iCUE Link 3500X RGB
I’m running everything at default settings with EXPO enabled. No one else has reported similar issues on a Ryzen X3D setup or with the RTX 5070 Ti. Could it be related to the PSU, BIOS, or GPU drivers? Any advice or troubleshooting steps would be really helpful!
BIOS Version 1087
NVIDIA Driver 581.42
iGPU Status: Uncertain — will verify. If active, should it be turned off?
Monitor: Samsung Odyssey G7 27″ (C27G75TQSM), linked through DisplayPort to the RTX 5070 Ti.
Remark: The Ryzen 7 9800X3D lacks an integrated GPU, meaning the iGPU setting in BIOS is either disabled or absent; the system depends entirely on the RTX 5070 Ti for output. (GPT response)
Turn it off if it's active, then return to the OS GUI. Use DDU to eliminate all GPU drivers (Intel, AMD, Nvidia) in Safe Mode. Restart and manually set up the newest GPU driver from Nvidia's support site via an elevated command, such as right-clicking the installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
It was a new setup from a bootable USB — does that mean it’s considered offline?
With DDU, I can’t start it in Safe Mode; it doesn’t open at all, so I’m forced to run it normally.
It was a fresh setup from a bootable USB — does that mean it's offline?
If internet access was available during the installation, then no, it wouldn’t be considered an offline install. The OS would have downloaded drivers suitable for your system, which usually doesn't happen.
Concerning DDU, I can't start it in Safe Mode; it won't open at all, so I need to use it normally.
Could you tell me where you obtained the operating system installer?
I managed to run DDU in Safe Mode after using the installer rather than the portable version. I installed GeForce Experience with the newest drivers, which should hopefully resolve the problem. Also, I turned off the iGPU as you suggested in the BIOS.
In general, the issue is usually about the GPU power connection, probably due to a faulty power cable. You might attempt to disconnect it from both the power supply and the GPU, reinsert the GPU, secure the cable firmly on both sides, and restart. If the problem persists, swap the cable again. Should the replacement cable still cause issues, the PSU or the GPU itself could be the source of the problem.
