I purchased a used EVGA 850 G3 PSU, but over time I become frustrated by the eco mode's abrupt fan speed changes. When I turned off the eco mode, nothing happened, and the fan only works when the PSU is warm. Should I worry about fixing it, as it might indicate a more serious issue while I’m only experiencing the noise?

Deciding whether to fix it or not hinges on whether you prefer to hear the fan kick. With a power supply cost, it could be simpler to mute it using your TV.

If my understanding is correct, the PSU operates as intended. Changing the switch position causes the fan to activate only when the PSU reaches a certain temperature and power output, such as 250W in ECO mode. In the opposite position, the fan runs continuously (ECO mode off), which I favor. This approach helps extend the lifespan of the capacitors, particularly those rated for lower temperatures. ECO mode lowers overall power use by reducing the number of watts needed for the fan, though it slightly increases the temperature of the PSU's internal parts. Personally, I value a cooler, longer-lasting system over complete silence, although I've experienced noisy fans in server environments.
