I have a 2021 Office Word document that I keep working on. Recently, I made several updates and saved it daily. The last night I restarted my Windows 10 PC to apply an update. This morning I returned to the office and opened the document in Word from the recent files list. I received a notification about restoring the file, which I clicked through because I was certain I had the latest version yesterday and that the settings would not delete my data. When the document opened, it restored the file from more than a week prior, not from any of my recent saves, but from a week ago, resulting in the loss of all my changes. This happened after I saved the document before rebooting my computer. WTH? Could someone please clarify what occurred and how to avoid this in the future? Thanks.

1) always perform a backup
2) examine the message prior to clicking through

Certainly, all my files are indeed backed up daily. I hadn't realized that before. And yes, reading messages is beneficial. My main concern is understanding why I received the message initially. I saved the file prior to rebooting, so I'm unsure why it showed up. Thank you.

you're unsure about the update. without knowing the exact message, your interpretation is the best option.
