I recently purchased Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition on Steam and immediately upon launching, the game displayed a black screen with a message indicating it wasn’t responding. I’m currently running it in XP mode with admin enabled, and I’ve installed DSFix to attempt a fix, though nothing seems to resolve the issue. I want to be sure I’m not missing anything, as I haven’t found a reliable solution online. Thank you for any advice you can offer.

Do you have the game running at full speed without restrictions? I’ve experienced crashes after enabling FPS mode, but I’m unsure what resolved them. It seems like you might have removed all your Dark Souls data and reinstalled it.

Except if the application runs smoothly at 60 frames per second, it failed to start.

The current DSfix version is being used. You might also attempt to run without it; the experience isn't as negative as commonly portrayed.

In your initial message, you noted that the game worked fine without any extra software installed.

I see, just a quick review of your initial message. Apart from restoring and removing all previous files before the new install, I don’t have any additional solutions.

Do you own an MSI afterburner? If yes, turn off RTS and attempt to play Dark Souls. This resolved the same problem for me. Updated February 22, 2016 by CyanideInsanity

DarkSouls is a terrible port. You’ll need a fix to push through this frustrating issue.

I completely disabled MSI Afterburner and it performed the same actions. Probably received a refund, so I might switch to DS2 or 3 next.
